It’s normal to feel mild stomach cramping when you have your period, but for some people the discomfort is so severe that it interferes with their sleep or keeps them from participating in sports or other things they enjoy.

As many as 15% of women have dysmenorrhea, the medical term for painful periods. In addition to stomach cramps, some people also have other symptoms like hip pain, lower back aches, nausea, and headaches.

For help getting some relief from your painful periods, come in and speak to our pharmacist.

Hemorrhoids are common and occur when the veins in the a**s and lower re**um become swollen and irritated. They can develop for many reasons, including pregnancy and older age. For many people, hemorrhoids can be very uncomfortable.

Everyone experiences spikes in their blood pressure at times, but usually only for short periods, like during exercise or a stressful situation. It becomes a problem when blood pressure stays higher than normal over time.

Healthy lifestyle habits including eating a balanced diet, managing stress, and getting enough physical activity, can help to reduce your chance of developing high blood pressure.

Come visit us at Douglas Compounding Pharmacy and we are happy to go over your medications and everything blood pressure related.

Pollinators like bees are vital to growing the foods we need, and most will ignore us if we leave them alone.

But do you know what to do when you or someone with you has been stung by a bee or wasp?

For most people, a sting is just painful. Dropping into the pharmacy for pain medications or an antihistamine can do the trick!

But for a few, it can be life-threatening. You may not know you're one of them until after you've been stung. A severe allergic reaction to bee stings (anaphylaxis) requires emergency treatment.

Talk with us to know the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis, and what you can do to protect you and your family.

It’s Canadian Men’s Health Month. A great time to encourage the men in our lives to check in with their physical and mental health. Regularly checking-in with yourself can help to reduce your symptoms of stress and anxiety.

Let’s get active together! Whether it’s playing golf, walking, or bike riding, studies show that exercise of all kinds triggers feel-good endorphins, soothes stress, eases anxiety, and helps relieve depression. Partner up with friends and family and encourage one another to make your physical health a priority.

Use an SPF 30 or higher broad-spectrum sunscreen – and reapply often!
Wear a hat, sunglasses, and cover up with as much as possible.

Talk to our pharmacist about your risks and how to stay safe.

If you’ve spotted white or yellow patches on your child's tongue or on the inside of your child’s cheeks, they may have a fungal infection called thrush. Thrush is most common in young kids, but can affect adults, too. (In adults, symptoms can also include a cottony feeling in your mouth and loss of taste.)

Come ask our pharmacist today if you have any questions about thrush or treatment for it, we can prescribe something that will help.

Here are three things you can do to help prevent thrush:

1) Practice good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day. If your baby uses a bottle or a pacifier, thoroughly clean them in hot water or the dishwasher after each use.

2) See your dentist regularly. This is especially important if you have certain health issues, like diabetes.

3) Limit the amount of sugar and yeast-containing foods you eat.
