STRESS FROM COVID-19 LEADING TO AN UPTICK ON TEETH GRINDING
Tooth grinding and other dental damage is increasing during the pandemic. Headaches, toothaches could be the result of stress-induced teeth grinding. Teeth grinding can break the teeth, fracture them, wear them down and cause sensitivity. A common solution is a night guard, it can help take the pressure off the teeth. Tooth sensitivity and soreness can be a sign of cavities, which have also increased during the pandemic.

DENTAL IMPLANTS vs. DENTAL BRIDGES
A Dental Implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into the jaw bone to hold a replacement tooth. It operates the same way as a real tooth and is durable and long-lasting. A Traditional Bridge “bridges” the gap where the missing tooth is with artificial crowns fused together and a healthy tooth on each side of a missing tooth is required to support the restoration. Implant supported Bridge is similar to a “traditional bridge” but instead of being cemented in place to teeth, it is held in place by implants. Let us help to choose the right option. Call us at 905-881-7839 to schedule a complimentary consultation.

TOOTHACHE!
A gum or gingival abscess is the result of infection or trauma to the surface of the gum tissue. Periodontal abscesses are the result of an infection that has moved deeper into gum areas (on the outside surfaces of a tooth), and a periapical abscess refers to a tooth with an infection of the dental pulp (starting inside a tooth).

04/27/2020

Dear patients,

As we continue our efforts to ‘flatten the curve’, we are spending more time in our homes. It is still very important to care for our physical and mental health as well as our oral health. The continuous stress we are experiencing during these uncertain times can lead to problems with our oral health.

Here are some suggestions on how to take care of your oral, physical, and mental health at home:

1. 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀. Avoid biting down on tough foods (e.g. nuts, hard candy, bones etc.) as it can lead to broken teeth or other -damage. Our mouths are designed to handle one function at a time (i.e. either eating or talking), thus, doing these at the same time can lead to cheek biting or breaking fillings or teeth.
2. 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴. To ensure your teeth stay healthy and clean, try using a Waterpik as it is very effective at creating a cleaner and healthier environment for your teeth.
3. 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝟯𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝘆. Regular physical exercise has positive impacts on both your mental and physical health. It is also a great way to relieve stress.
4. 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀. Living through a pandemic can be very stressful for people and lead to very strong emotions. Try to limit your exposure to the news, focus on only things you can control (e.g. finding fun things to do, following health guidelines, etc.) and get plenty of sleep.

As we wait for the community and the economy to reopen, we are actively developing a strategy and detailed plan on how to manage the health and safety of our patients when the office reopens.

Keep well and stay safe.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF PERIODONTAL (GUM) DISEASE?
- Red and puffy gums – Gums should never be red or swollen.
- Bleeding gums – Gums should never bleed, even when you brush vigorously or use dental floss.
- Persistent bad breath – Caused by bacteria in the mouth.
- New spacing between teeth – Caused by bone loss.
- Loose teeth – Also caused by bone loss or weakened periodontal fibers (fibers that support the tooth to the bone).
- Pus around the teeth and gums – Sign that there is an infection present.
- Receding gums – Loss of gum around a tooth.
- Tenderness or Discomfort – Plaque, calculus and bacteria irritate the gums and teeth
Good Oral Hygiene, a balanced diet and regular dental visits can help to reduce the risks of periodontal disease.
To ensure great oral health, brush twice a day, floss daily and have regular dental check up.

GUM DISEASE COULD INCREASE COVID-19 SYMPTOM SEVERITY
Gum disease can cause more problems than rotting teeth and bad breath. It can lead to other health issues, like diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which exacerbate potential COVID-19 problems. The study by the Journal of Clinical Periodontology suggests that COVID-19 patients with gum disease were nine times more likely to have serious complications.
During the pandemic, some people may have slacked off a bit on their oral health care. It is important to continue brushing really well, twice a day, flossing between your teeth, eating a healthy diet, and seeing your dentist regularly.
