Hi, I’m Scotty Stiles, owner of How to Heal Chronic Pain. As a Pain Elimination Coach and Mindbody Practitioner, my mission is to help you unlock your natural ability to heal. Symptoms can sometimes become a bit of a habit for the brain. It’s like the brain has learned to keep sending symptom signals, even when there’s no actual danger or injury. This doesn’t mean the symptoms aren’t real, they’re VERY real. It’s just that the brain has gotten used to sending these signals, almost like it’s on autopilot. It means that the brain has created a neural pathway for the symptom and it can keep using it, just because it is a habit. But the good news is, that just as the brain learns to send these signals, it can also learn to stop sending them.

When it comes to chronic pain and other symptoms, the brain can just as simply learn to misinterpret non-threatening sensations and signals as dangerous, creating a habitual response of firing symptoms.

With techniques like Somatic Tracking that we practice in Pain Reprocessing Therapy as part of the treatment protocol at The Pain Psychology Center, you can retrain your brain to recognize that these signals are unnecessary and help it break the cycle. It’s all about helping your brain understand that it’s safe and there’s no need to keep hitting the panic button.

Did you know that bottling up your emotions can actually impact your physical health? When we suppress emotions like anger, sadness, or fear, our brain interprets this as a signal that something is wrong. This can put the brain and nervous system on high alert, leading to the development of neuroplastic pain and other mindbody symptoms.

Here’s how it works:

• Emotional Suppression Creates Stress: When we push emotions down, the brain perceives this internal conflict as a threat. This activates the fight-or-flight response, even if there’s no actual danger.

• Nervous System Overload: Chronic suppression keeps your nervous system stuck in overdrive, making it hypersensitive. This can cause the brain to amplify pain signals or even create physical symptoms as a distraction from the suppressed emotions.

• The Body Keeps the Score: Suppressed emotions don’t just go away—they can manifest as tension, headaches, fatigue, digestive issues, or chronic pain.

When we approach ourselves with the mindset that something is “wrong” and needs to be “fixed,” we send a subtle but powerful message to the brain that we are unsafe. This triggers the brain’s threat response, as it interprets this self criticism and hypervigilance as a sign of danger. Over time, this state of heightened alertness can amplify neuroplastic pain and other mindbody symptoms, as the brain becomes more sensitive to perceived threats - both emotional and physical.

When we cultivate self compassion, we engage in a practice that soothes the nervous system, shifting it from a state of threat (fight, flight, or freeze) into one of safety and calm (rest and repair). Think of it like this, it’s like dealing with a pesky raccoon that’s found its way into your attic. As long as you’re afraid of it and keep feeding it, it’ll stick around and cause chaos. But once you stop giving it attention and remove its fuel source, the raccoon has no reason to stay.

In the same way, when you stop fearing pain and take away its power, it loses its grip on you. By changing your relationship with pain and using techniques like somatic tracking and safety reappraisal, you can help your brain reinterpret those sensations as safe. You’re essentially telling that mischievous raccoon that there’s nothing for them here anymore, and encouraging it to move along.
