How much physical activity does your child or teen need? Physical activity in these middle years helps with: -motor skills, balance, visual tracking skills -social skills, confidence, mental health and self-regulation For those between 5 and 17 years, we recommend -60 mins per day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (e.g. those during which the child can still talk) --including 3 days a week of vigorous physical activity (e.g. those during which the child is sweating and able to speak a few words at a time before pausing for a breath) --AND 3 days a week of bone- and muscle-strengthening activities (e.g. activities that include pushing, pulling and lifting) -And Sleep is important! --5 to 13 year olds: 9-11 hours per night, uninterrupted --13 to 17 year olds: 8-10 hours per night, uninterrupted -Try to limit sitting or sedentary activities to two hours per day, when possible! Keeping toddlers physically active is usually not hard, as they are usually intrinsically energetic and curious. However, during the pandemic, many families have had less physical activity and more screen time. Try for at least 30 minutes of structured physical activity (led by a grown up) and 60 minutes of unstructured physical activity daily (in which you follow the child’s lead)! Are there exercises for babies? Starting from birth, usually right after the umbilical cord falls off, you can start to build your child’s gross motor skills, head control and trunk muscles! This is through something called “tummy time,” which is when your baby is placed tummy down on a firm, safe surface. (like a foam playmat or yoga mat) This should not be done on a soft surface like a bed or couch or a high surface from which they could roll or fall. When the child is placed tummy down, be right in front of them to encourage them with a toy or your voice to cheer them on. Ensure that they are able to breathe easily. Start with just 30-60 seconds per session, and slowly increase the amount of time they spend on their tummies. Eventually, you can help them place their hands and arms under their shoulders to push up, and eventually onto all fours in the months ahead. We recommend babies get a total of 30 minutes daily of tummy time, often broken into a couple of minutes at a time – like right after every diaper change and to use a timer. Do not do tummy time right after feeding. Many babies cry during the first days or weeks of tummy time, because it’s hard work. While the currently available COVID vaccines were not tested specifically on pregnant women, multiple participants in the study became pregnant during the studies and thousands of pregnant women globally – including healthcare professionals themselves – have chosen to get the COVID vaccine while pregnant. More recent studies have confirmed no negative impact of the vaccine on ovary function or IVF outcomes. There is also no biological reason to suggest that the COVID vaccine leads to an increased risk of autism if given in pregnancy. Rather, being pregnant and getting COVID is linked to significant health risks for both mom and baby.
