There is a lot of speculation as to why law enforcement officer su***des are higher than others, including—alcoholism, depression and divorce. In truth, those issues may only be symptoms of a bigger problem: post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The truth is, an average law enforcement career is well-suited to produce PTSD for some officers. Between the long hours, the fatigue, the potential health issues and trauma, it is easy to understand how PTSD may contribute to higher su***de rates among officers.

Loneliness

Loneliness is twice as deadly as obesity, and just as deadly as smoking a pack of ci******es every single day.
But, the MOST danger thing about loneliness is that it becomes self-sustaining. When lonely, our brains become more attuned to other people, but the ability to correctly understand others' reactions gets worse. As a result, we misinterpret neutral reactions for hostility and danger. Loneliness becomes a way of self-preservation and continues a vicious cycle.
Chronic loneliness is interpreted by the brain as social rejection which prior to our industrial society, essentially meant death because survival on our own was basically impossible.
Our fast paced world has us ever more busy and technologically plugged in, and yet completely starved of the necessary sustenance of the human connection. However, we all have the power to change this path for ourselves and the people around us. Take a moment today to reach out to someone you've lost contact with. If you want to take your mental health and wellbeing to the next level, download Avail today to see what else you can do to become a healthier version of yourself.

Featured Mental Health Warrior: Inspector Gord Cobey has been a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for more than 24 years. During his service, he has held a variety of positions that have provided their fair share of stressful situations. Relatively early in his career, Gord went through a period when he felt overwhelmed by the stressors of his work and personal life. He was unable to sleep and his life at home and work was negatively impacted. He sought help to deal with the situation. The psychologist helped him to realize that what he was experiencing was the result of a series of personal and professional events. This gave Gord a better understanding of what he was going through and how to manage his mental health. In the end, this was a very positive experience for him. As a mental health champion for the RCMP, Gord feels it is essential to have more informed and compassionate discussions about mental health at home and in our workplaces. By looking after oneself and being kind to others, we can eliminate stigma and make people realize that mental health is an inherent part of our overall health.
