⚕️** Bloodwork, Urinalyses, Gut testing, S*x hormones, Thyroid hormones, Adrenal hormones (cortisol etc). Whether traditional blood markers or more specialty-lab testing is what you are looking for, your Naturopathic Doctor is here to help.
Did you know NDs are licensed to both requisition a huge array of tests as well as help you interpret / assess the results?
Laboratory reference ranges do not always catch pathology, especially if it's in the earlier stages (before getting full blown). It's important to have at least one of your primary care providers (whether ND, MD, NP or other) go through the numbers with you to really get a sense of what might be going on when you are feeling symptoms of any kind. In a lot of cases, if we're really looking and listening, we can see trends that match what you're going through. Sometimes we can treat it early, sometimes we can intervene with prevention strategies. Oftentimes results that fall into the lab's particular reference range can still give us important information that is actionable, and may even trigger further testing we might otherwise have missed.
When's the last time you felt exhausted all the time and never got a call back after bloodwork? We are taught to assume that this always means that everything looks optimal but so much can be missed if we're not paying attention.
If you're already going through the needle jab or urine or breath test or otherwise, why not make sure you understand what those results mean about your health?
Talk to your ND today or book in with me if you don't already have someone amazing you're working with.

** WINTER WALKS **

I'm a planner. Recovering A type. I am really working on (and loving!) living and acting more intuitively.

This morning I went on my usual pre-yoga/workout stroll around the neighbourhood. Dry sidewalks, cool temps, grey skies. As I walked and let my mind go, it began gently snowing. I felt a rush of joy.

Upon arrival 'home', I felt compelled to go further. Into the woods - truly more home to me than anywhere else. The gentle snow picked up its pace and I made the unnatural and conscious decision to forgo my usual morning movement and keep up what I had going on. My body, mind and soul craved more time with the trees, longer time for reflection. I don't usually have the time available, but today, I did. It was unlike me, and still, I went.

I do my clearest thinking when walking...even more so when in such picturesque environments.

Who knows how much time went by. 60 min? 80? I don't wear a watch and never carry my phone when in nature. My hair was covered in white (and melted just in time for this photo), all limbs were chilled. So alive. My mind ran free.

Best morning ever.

Here's to more intuitive living and allowing for greater flexibility of thought and action.

Cold Water Treading. The OG way.
Don't mistake my geeky knee high socks for rubber boots... This weekend I took my mesh runners into the icy river for a refreshing little stroll.
With snow capped trees all around and above offering shinrin yoku to boot, this couldn't have been more perfect, nor more...medicinal.
Get outside. Dunk your feet into some fresh body of water. Hydrotherapy at its finest. Costs nothing. One of the most accessible, and highly effective, medicines.
I ❤️ Nature Cure.

☝🏼☝🏼 THIS. This is the stuff that keeps me so insanely thrilled and gratified with what I do. I received this email a week or so after an initial visit wherein we discussed some key foundations to health.
As much as I fervently believe in every single word I preach in this office, this type of response never ceases to amaze me and fill me to the brim with emotion for my patients. How utterly remarkable what foundational care can do.
In this case it was calm where there was once anxiety. In others, it's sound sleep where there was insomnia, or a happy gut where there was digestive distress... The reach of this medicine really has no limits.
If you don't already have a naturopathic doctor you see, find one today. It's not about "already having a doctor". The truth is that having a family doctor AND an ND (alongside your favourite chiro, physio, RMT, osteo, etc) is like building the best possible health team for yourself. We all do different things really well. Arm yourself with professionals that have varied views and training and perspectives on your health so you are always supported and moving towards thriving.
NDs do both acute and chronic care really well. We often shine hope upon a health situation for which you believe there may be none left. There are *many* avenues - know that we will keep working with you until we find those that move the needle for you. Mind, body, spirit - always.

Plants as medicine. While eating plants can be considered 'medicinal' in its own right (covered in part 1 of this series, on Nutrition), botanical treatments are higher potency extracts of one or more constituents of that whole plant. i.e. the difference between eating turmeric root and taking a curcumin powder or softgel.

You may not consider your morning or evening tea as medicine, but in fact, in most cases it is. Herbal teas are water extracts of plants - meaning that with a good steep we are extracting the water-soluble compounds out of that root/leaf/flower. Tinctures are (rather strong) alcoholic extracts - you may recall putting some drops in water or directly on your tongue and feeling that you ingested some sort of poison instead 😜🙋 (amiright?). There are glycerites, balms, oil infusions, poultices ... The world of botanical medicine is vast as it is absolutely amazing.

NDs can use these plant remedies to treat any concern you can think of; if a symptom exists, rest assured there are a host of plants and extracts in our toolbox to treat it. A significant proportion of our 4 years of post grad study lies in this particular field of knowledge. Your ND may choose to use a single herb, though one of my favourite things to do is to personalize tinctures for my patients - using 3-5 hand-selected herbs to use in concert in specific ratios in order to help treat a variety of concerns at the same time.

The science on these herbs is not only qualitatively and quantitatively strong, it's historically so. The art (and our privilege as NDs) is in knowing how exactly to use them - alone or in combination - to help you heal.

(My personal bias here is that when we consume plants in their various forms in this way, our bodies, brains and spirits remember from whence we've come - well prior to more modern prescriptions. And if our increasing disconnection from Nature is causing ill, certainly our reconnection will promote health and healing.)

To plants.

Quick reminder from Indian Hindu monk Paramahansa Yogananda - we must all face ourselves in mind, body and spirit eventually. And to procrastinate or postpone this process only keeps us further from Truth and happiness for longer.

Can we take a sec to talk about my favourite subject ever?
One thing that NDs do really well is guide patients on all the little (not little) life things that fall between the supplements and tinctures and dietary strategies.
We ask questions and listen closely: What are you doing in that last few hours before bed? Do you wake feeling well rested? When do you find you're needing caffeine or quick-fix foods? What amount of time do you spend indoors versus outdoors? What are your primary stressors and how are they affecting you?
I'll repeat, these things are the opposite of little. They're the all-day-every-day pieces that make up the fabric of your entire life.
NDs have a keen ear for picking up the places where a certain aspect could be adjusted in order to help your system get back to balance. Ensuring any blocks to healing have been removed so your system can do the good physiological work it always already knows how to do.
You don't have to accept a life of symptoms or dis-ease. Physical, emotional, cognitive, spiritual... You have the innate capacity to heal yourself.
Naturopathic Doctors will guide you in these lifestyle pieces that you may have no idea are causing imbalance or are in any way part of the problem.
Lifestyle medicine is so incredibly powerful. Come and chat with me if you're curious about how to access (and double down on) your own personal prescription for thriving.

You might have benefits for naturopathic medicine, but might also be wondering, what the heck do we actually do??
While we do a lot of things, let's start with NUTRITION. When you book in with an ND, regardless of your symptoms, know that what/when and how we eat and drink can all have major impacts on your physical and mental health.
As much as we'd love it to be so, the truth is there is no one-trick-pony diet that is best for everyone.
When you're in my office, I'll learn about your specific concerns and distill down the most important (read: impactful) ways that YOU can tweak YOUR nutrition habits. Always evidence informed, and always individualized to your specific needs.
What we consume and how is arguably THE most important piece to getting yourself out of illness or stickiness and into THRIVING.
(There's a ton more that NDs do, but this for starters)
If you want to start exploring this for yourself, book in today. If you have any questions, feel free to comment below or send me a DM. I can't wait to work with you!

I really LOVE it when someone who has never tried TCM acupuncture starts sessions with me. It's quite thrilling for the patient and for me. And honestly, the feedback never gets old.
If you've never tried Traditional Chinese Medicine (whether needles, acupressure and/or herbs), it can be a game changer. It's gentle. Often subtle. Contrary to what one may think of when visualising needles, near every patient reports feeling relaxed in the treatment and notes that energy carrying through to their day/evening. As the sessions progress, they see that it's far beyond that feeling of relaxation.
Depending on the case, I usually start weekly acupuncture treatments with my patients after 3 or 4 sessions, when we have diet, lifestyle and possible supplementation in check. You know what you're doing at home as far as treatments are concerned, and that's when we layer in this energetic approach.
Even if you feel you've got 20 things going on, Chinese medicine sees all of those seemingly disparate symptoms as part of one pattern that needs harmonizing. In a too-fast, too-complex world, this type of 'simplification' can feel like a godsend. Ah, that's all it is?
If you've ever felt your progress with an MD or ND plateauing, TCM acupuncture may be just the thing you need. If you feel that increasing the dose of this or that Rx or adding a new one to the mix just isn't the solution you were hoping for, know that there is SO much more that's possible for your health and wellbeing.
See an ND today. Your health is in your hands.

✔️✔️Treat the cause...✔️✔️
I had an old car once that had all sorts of dashboard warning lights on. Allllll the time. I was in and out of the mechanic on the regular to make sure it wouldn't blow up on me. One day, sort of exasperated, he looked me straight in the eye, shrugged his shoulders and said "It's got some issues... do you want me to just cut off their electrical connection so they don't keep turning on?"
I know you think I'm making this up for the sake of a sick metaphor...but this actually happened.
Making patients feel better when symptoms make things challenging is important. Meds, herbs, supplements are sometimes exactly what's initially required to kill a pathogen and prevent an even worse infection from taking root. Helping temporarily ease physical or emotional pain so that patients can restart the activities that keep pain at bay to begin with is good medicine.
What's not, however, is failing to address the *why* of your state of dis-ease. Why is your cholesterol high, for example? Why is your body in a state of putting out fires? Why are you so tired or wired or stiff or in pain that you need the Rx at all? Why is your immune system so imbalanced that it's attacking what's self or not attacking what's foreign? Why are our nervous systems (so epidemically) on overdrive?
I see my role as an ND as that of an investigator and guide. When patients are in my care, I'm constantly watching and listening for clues. They lead me down this or that path, and, gradually, we uncover what's really going on under the surface. And when we do, I guide them as to how to simply but surely treat that cause. Diet and lifestyle, as I've repeated too many times to count, are always going to be the tools that make the biggest impact on your state of health.
I want my patients to feel better in the short AND long term.
How about we make the changes to ensure the warning light turns off on its own because the engine isn't actually on fire anymore. Now that would be real peace of mind.

Here's to your whole health, my sisters. Happy IWD ❤️🔥 #

Ready for this? About to embarrass myself here:
I used to really believe that if I didn't run for 60 minutes it didn't count.
Or if my yoga class wasn't a 75-90 minute sweat-fest it was only stretching.
Obviously this was well pre motherhood when I had complete control over the minutes of my day...but still, kids or no kids, crazy work hours or none, that thinking is laughable to me now.
These days, life looks a lot different. Well beyond the varying demands at different stages of life, I realize just how naive and erred it was to have such rigid ideas about what did and didn't qualify as 'exercise'. It's been a very gradual process of (quite consciously) loosening my grip on such arbitrary, inflexible thinking - in the realm of healthy movement and well beyond.
Last week was bu-sy. There were days I wasn't able to fit in anything beyond rushing down the grocery store aisles. But when I had 15 minutes one day I filled it with what's likely the shortest home workout I've ever done... the afterglow was no less gratifying. Simply, it felt amazing to move.
It occurred to me that I could actually make my healthy movement look any particular way and last any particular time frame that I wanted or had available. And that no matter the length or look of it, my body, brain and psyche were so much better off for having done it at all.
Some movement is better than none. 5 minutes is 5 entire minutes greater than zero. Such simple math.
So no excuses now.

01/11/2023

So what exactly is whole person health?
It's recognizing that how we feel (and whatever dis-ease we may be experiencing) is the collective result of where our body, brain and spirit are at at any particular moment.
There is, in fact, no aspect of our physiology that is entirely disconnected from what is going on in our emotional or cognitive state. When one toggle moves in this or that direction, others are inevitably affected.
You get bloating with dairy or gluten? You get panic attacks with new situations? You have headaches or knee pain or severe menstrual cramps? No matter what it is that ails you, the physiology is absolutely going to affect your mood and/or thinking. If you have anxiety or depression to begin with, know that those are not wholly separate from your state of gut health and digestion, nor your poor sleep or your immunity. But you know this to be true already.
What needs to happen for your health to be properly attended to, is for your primary care practitioner(s) to recognize these inherent connections and treat with those in mind. Anything less is piecemeal.
Naturopathic doctors are so well placed to keep this crucial connection at the forefront when guiding you through your treatments. Indeed, we are trained to see the 'whole' you. Nothing ignored.
This is the type of care we all deserve.
NDs have the education, training (and the frank time with you) to offer this as a given.
Book your initial consult today (links in bio).
To your holistic health ✌🏼

It's time to start changing the way we think and speak about ourselves and the imagined limits on our future wellness.
I've found myself talking a lot about this over the last few weeks in clinical practice.
I'm hearing people identifying with their current struggles so much so that it becomes them. "Well you know me, I just can't ever do that."
When is the last time you challenged a limiting belief? Even if it's "true" for this very moment, it's absolutely possible for aspects of it to change.
The very first thing required is awareness. Listen to your personal monologues about yourself and your capacities. Really hear the way you speak to yourself and to others about yourself.
Then, once identified, start changing the language. Figure out what it is you'd like to change and seek out guidance from an experienced professional as to how to start doing so.
NDs have *so many* tools to help you.
Write yourself a new story. You are not the same person you were yesterday. Allow your protagonist some evolution.
If not today then...?

12/02/2022

There is no one principle that is more or less important than the others in Naturopathic medical care. This one, however, is pretty damned key.

Above all else, as NDs, we are *always* considering your safety and whole-person wellness. As a patient on the other end you may not be aware that this thought process is going on for us when we're building your treatment plans or making recommendations. Here is a bit of a background look at what we consider when planning your treatment avenues:

- Any limitations you may have to access or implement a particular treatment

- Herb-drug interactions to ensure you have full knowledge of potential harms when mixing medications and supplements

- Your personal triggers / aggravating factors as well as what has helped you in the past

- Obstacles to cure that may be getting in the way if healing without your knowledge

- Your preferences / desires for treatment modalities and options

- Your individual priorities and goals for your health and wellness (versus OUR goals for you)

Know that whenever you are sitting down with a Naturopathic Doctor, we are taking all of this into account and doing our utmost to follow the principle of First, Do No Harm.

This is the very least we can expect from practitioners in our circle of care.

Here for you.
