Lifting weights and lifting spirits 🦾
I was happy to see this article in Toronto Star about CAMH’s supervised exercise program for people living with depression - a client thoughtfully shared it with me.
Exercise is often discussed in terms of physical health, but its impact can extend well beyond our muscles, bones and cardiovascular system. Regular movement can also support mental wellbeing, confidence and a sense of connection. Exercise is a huge part of my self care.
What I particularly appreciate about this program is its emphasis on supervised, accessible exercise in a supportive environment. Getting started can be challenging, especially when you’re struggling with your mental health. Having someone meet you where you are, help you build gradually and make the experience feel manageable can make a real difference.
As a personal trainer, I see exercise as so much more than a physical pursuit. It’s about helping people feel more capable, building trust in their bodies and supporting their quality of life.
Exercise isn’t a replacement for appropriate mental health care, but it deserves a meaningful place in the conversation.
I hope we see more programs like this, and greater recognition of the role that qualified exercise professionals can play in supporting overall health.
