Medical, Surgical and Cosmetic Solutions for Hair Loss
Technical and artistic advances have dramatically changed hair transplants over the past decade, making them virtually undetectable today and that's what is driving the immense growth in this profession. The popularity of hair transplants today is not surprising considering how many people are affected by hair loss. Statistics show that 40 to

50 per cent of men and women will suffer from hair loss by age 50. About 45% of patients from the survey would likely not discuss their hair transplants with family and friends, while the other 45% would freely share their experiences. Today's hair transplants are so natural looking that even your hair stylist cannot tell that you've had one. Toronto-Canada, has become an epicenter for hair transplant procedures for both men and women and the expertise here actually attracts global patients. These days, even female patients are seeking for hair loss solutions including hair transplantation. Men and women are receiving treatments at younger ages than before. ISHRS members provided percentages of male and female surgical patients treated by age category, and more than half (57.9 per cent) of patients fell between the ages of 30 to 49 years old. According to the ISHRS, the world's leading medical authority on hair loss and hair restoration, procedures performed worldwide were up 34 per cent from 2004 to 2006 (versus 42% in Canada specifically). These statistics released from a recent member survey conducted by ISHRS indicate there were approximately 645,281 hair restoration patients worldwide in 2006. On a global scale, the estimated worldwide hair restoration market size is $1,376,043,747 in Canadian funds. Surgical patients in their 30s represented the age group with the largest number of patients undergoing hair restoration surgery (31.4 per cent males and 26.4 per cent females) - a shift from 2004 in which patients in their 40s comprised the largest number of surgical patients. This survey confirms that men and women want to treat their hair loss as soon as the problem becomes noticeable with medication prior to surgery, which is a smart decision since early detection and intervention are essential to treating and preventing future hair loss. Hair Transplant Surgery
Hair Transplant Surgery is a simple surgical procedure in which the hair restoration physician harvest hair from the back and sides of the head (donor area) in a strip or by extraction of follicular units and replants it into the balding areas (recipient area). The donor hair is programmed to continue to grow during the life of the patient. Hair Transplantation can be used to treat hair loss of scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, facial hair, body hair etc...

At the present time hair transplantation can only use the donor’s own hair. Most men and women with hair loss can be suitable candidates for this procedure. There is no age limit for the hair transplant candidate. The candidate need to undergo laboratory testing to exclude medical conditions which may be a contraindication for this minor surgical procedure. Special pre-surgical instructions to the patient include avoidance of blood thinners one week prior to the surgery. The surgical procedure can take up to 8 hours or more to be performed, using the talent of skilled technicians and an experienced physician, and depending on the amount of follicular units to be planted. The procedure is carry out in an approved Out of Hospital Premises level 2 under local anesthetics which is locally infiltrated into the donor and recipient areas. During the surgery the patient can take nourishment, break for stretching, has access to the washroom, watch videos, television, listen to the music or sleep. After the procedure the patient is discharged by the physician with written post-surgical instructions in which a telephone number for emergency is provided. The patient receives a phone call from the physician early the next day to assure there are not concerns or questions. In most cases the patient can return to work in two days depending on his/her occupation. Contact sports should be avoid for two weeks. The hair can be washed as usual the next day. If you wish to conceal the transplant you can wear a loose hat to cover the transplant the next day. Combing and styling can begin in two weeks. The stitches are not required to be removed since they dissolve on their own. Follow up appointment is booked in six months unless the patient requires an earlier follow up. This procedure is very forgiving and the risk of infection or complications is remote. The hair begins to grow in three to four months. The full effect of the transplantation is visible in a year.
