Midlife women’s mental health deserves our attention.
According to Statistics Canada’s 2019 data, shared by the Public Health Agency of Canada, women aged 50–64 had the highest su***de rate among the female age groups reported in Canada. Behind this statistic are real women, families and communities.
Some women experience depression during the transition to menopause. Persistent sadness, heightened anxiety, irritability or losing interest in things you once enjoyed deserve assessment and care—not dismissal as “just menopause.”
Su***de is complex, and this statistic does not mean menopause alone causes it. It reminds us to listen carefully, take women’s concerns seriously and make mental health part of midlife care.
At The Menopause Practice, our nurse practitioners and Carolyn Nykiforuk, MSW, RSW, Registered Social Worker & Counsellor, offer support for women navigating this stage of life.
You do not have to wait until you are overwhelmed to ask for help. Tell someone how you are feeling. Check in on a friend. Make space for an honest answer to “How are you?”
You deserve to be heard, supported and cared for.
If you or someone you know is thinking about su***de, call or text 9-8-8 in Canada, available 24/7. If there is immediate danger, call 9-1-1.
