Autumn in a blue zone does not look like a pumpkin spice ad. It looks like this.

These photos are from Bolotana, a village high in the mountains of Sardinia and one of the newest longevity hotspots. Fall here is not about doing more. It is the season the whole place slows down to the rhythm of the harvest.

The grapes come off the vine for Cannonau w**e. The first olives are pressed into oil. And when the work is done, the village sits down at one long table that stretches into the night.

No one is rushing. No one is eating alone. No one is trying to optimize their evening.

This is the part of longevity you cannot buy or supplement. The world’s longest-lived people let the seasons set the pace, and autumn is when they ease off: shorter days, slower meals, more time around the table with the people they have known their whole lives.

So let fall slow you down a little. Cook something that simmers. Linger a little longer after dinner. Call the person you keep meaning to call.

What does Fall look like where you’re from?👇

THE NEXT FRONTIER OF LONGEVITY: More Healthy Years, Not Just More Birthdays
A Disneyplus special premiering New Year’s Day and Dan Buettner's Blue Zones Evolution, publishing January 5 from National Geographic explore four regions where people enjoy exceptional healthy longevity—and what their lives can teach us.

The longevity boom has made living to 100 an obsession. Dan Buettner asks a more urgent question: How much of that life will we be healthy enough to enjoy?

In Blue Zones Evolution, Blue Zones founder shifts his investigation from extraordinary numbers of centenarians to places where people enjoy unusually long lives in good health.

Drawing on global health data and on-the-ground reporting, Buettner explores four regions through the lens of health-adjusted life expectancy, or HALE—a measure that accounts for both years lived and health lost to illness or disability.

The ambition is bigger than extending life. It is preserving the ability to walk, think, participate and remain independent for more of it.

Costa Rica is proof that a rich life doesn’t require being rich. 🇨🇷

The country produces more happiness per dollar than anywhere else in the world, and more health for every dollar spent on healthcare.

Their secret? Prioritizing what actually makes life worth living: meaningful work, strong relationships, trust, generosity, and community.

Costa Ricans spend an estimated 6 to 7 hours a day connecting face to face.

Not scrolling. Not staring at screens. Actually living.

Maybe the secret to a longer, happier life isn’t having more. It’s connecting more.

"Bolotana doesn’t have a gym, and its residents don’t exercise intentionally—but they do walk pretty much everywhere, including up and down the village’s steep, hilly streets. Additionally, Bolotana’s residents live in multi-generational households, and many men stay home and share in the household responsibilities." In Bolotana, a town on the Italian island with about 2,300 residents, women who reach the age of 70 are about three times as likely to live to 100 than women in the United States, according to a new study

"Researchers traveled to Bolotana and were surprised to find 10 of the 2,262 people living there were at least 100 years old — a concentration of centenarians about 10 times the Sardinian average and 11 times the US average. Women of Bolotana had an even more pronounced advantage." Read more: https://nypost.com/2026/10/13/health/the-new-blue-zone-thats-no-2-in-the-world-for-female-longevity/

"Close to 14 out of 100 female residents of Bolotana who reach 70 can expect to live to 100, and the remaining life expectancy for women at age 70 was 20.85 years—that’s longer than women in Sardinia’s original Nuoro Province blue zones [region] and Italy, more broadly, according to the study." In Okinawa, Japan, people traditionally sit on the floor to read, eat, talk, and relax instead of sitting in chairs, though this practice is dying out among younger generations in Asia. Okinawan centenarians sit and get up from the floor dozens or hundreds of times per day.

This exercises their legs, back, and core in a natural way as they get up and down all day long. Sitting on the floor also improves posture and increases overall strength, flexibility, and mobility. Studies correlate the “ability to sit and rise from the floor without support” with a longer life expectancy.

They never set foot in a gym. They just never stopped moving.

In the blue zones, exercise is not something people schedule. It is built into the day. Shepherds walk miles over the hills. Elders tend their gardens and press their own w**e. They ride, they forage, they cook from scratch, and they visit friends on foot.

Here is the part that is easy to miss. If exercise is your passion or your joy, wonderful, keep it up. But as a public health strategy, telling people to work out has not delivered what we hoped. For 50 years the advice has been to hit the gym, and as a society we are heavier and more chronically ill than ever. Willpower alone was never going to move an entire population.

The world’s longest-lived people did not rely on it. They move naturally, all day long, without ever calling it a workout. No memberships, no machines, no counting steps. They simply built a life that keeps the body in motion, and let their surroundings do the work that willpower could not.

That is the real lesson of the blue zones: shape your environment so the active choice is the easy one.

What is one way you could add more movement to your day without “exercising”? 👇

Ask Dan Buettner what he eats to live better, longer, and this is the bowl he keeps coming back to.

Four ingredients, each one a longevity staple: a baked sweet potato, stewed black beans, brown rice, and avocado, all piled into one bowl.

Beans are the cornerstone of every blue zones diet and the single best food for a long life. The brown rice and sweet potato bring slow, steady energy and fiber. The avocado adds the good fat that ties it together. Put them in one bowl and, as Dan says, you have all the elements of longevity right there.

No weighing, no rules, no special powders. You stew, you bake, you mash, you combine.

It is proof that eating for a longer life is not complicated or expensive. It is beans, grains, a vegetable, and a little good fat, made into something you actually want to eat.

Save this for lunch tomorrow, and tell us: what is the one meal you could happily eat every day? 👇
