Artful fruits
A large-scale pear, painted in vibrant hues, wraps around the side of a house like a playful mural, turning an everyday building into a whimsical piece of art. Its glossy skin catches the light, making the fruit appear almost ripe enough to pluck from the wall. The sun would bring out the colors but this photo was taken on a rainy day.

Blissful fruits
Autumn harvest raspberries are typically ready to pick from late summer through early autumn, depending on the variety and climate. In cooler regions like Germany, they are often harvested from September to October, with varieties such as ‘Autumn Bliss’ or ‘Heritage’ producing fruit on first-year canes (primocanes). For a continuous supply, stagger planting or choose early-, mid-, and late-season varieties, and ensure well-drained, fertile soil with full sun exposure.

Stressed fruits
The summer drought likely stressed the strawberries, causing them to enter a dormant state to survive the dry conditions. When the autumn rains arrived, the sudden change in moisture and temperature triggered a second blooming phase, as the plants sensed more favorable growing conditions. This late-season bloom can happen, but it may reduce the energy available for fruit production next year.

Nutritious fruits
Around 2.3 billion people globally faced food insecurity in 2024, with 1.3 billion unable to afford a nutritious diet, according to the FAO’s 2024 State of Food Security and Nutrition report. The cost of a healthy diet has risen sharply—up 6.5% in 2023 alone—leaving millions priced out of essential nutrients. Inequality, inflation, and climate shocks are deepening the crisis, disproportionately affecting low-income households in both developing and developed nations. (Sources: FAO, WHO, World Bank)
