Girl Up Artemis, in collaboration with Hawa Feminist Coalition – Somalia, held an online webinar on Thursday, October 1, 2026, focusing on online blackmail, with the aim of raising awareness of digital safety and protecting women and girls.

The webinar took place in the context of the challenges faced by women and girls in Somalia, where growing reliance on digital spaces makes awareness, prevention, and online safety increasingly important.

The session explored the causes and forms of online blackmail, prevention and protection measures, and safe ways to respond to digital threats and risks, particularly those targeting women and girls.

It also highlighted the importance of understanding digital rights, protecting personal information and privacy, and responding to online threats in safer and more informed ways.

Through initiatives like this, Girl Up Artemis and Hawa Feminist Coalition continue to promote awareness and empowerment while working toward safer and more inclusive digital spaces for women and girls.

Digital safety is a right. Awareness is a step toward a safer and more just digital space.

استعرضت مريم نتائج دراسة “Violence Against Women in the Online Space: Multi-Country Research in the Arab States”، التي أُجريت بين 16 يوليو و3 سبتمبر 2021، وشملت 11,500 مستخدمة للإنترنت في 8 دول عربية.

As part of the dialogue on cyber extortion and violence against women online, organized by Girl Up Artemis at the American University in Cairo, Mariam Gamal Louka, Founder of Girl Up Artemis, discussed the gap between women's experiences in the Arab region and European statistics.

She highlighted findings from “Violence Against Women in the Online Space: Multi-Country Research in the Arab States,” conducted from 16 July to 3 September 2021, surveying 11,500 female internet users across 8 Arab countries.

The reported rates of cyber extortion were: 🇮🇶 Iraq 70.4% | 🇱🇾 Libya 64% | 🇾🇪 Yemen 63% | 🇯🇴 Jordan 62%
🇹🇳 Tunisia 58.1% | 🇱🇧 Lebanon 54.2% | 🇲🇦 Morocco 46.7% | 🇵🇸 Palestine 35.2%

These figures highlight the scale of violence women face online and the urgent need for greater awareness, protection, support, and accountability.

We are happy to share highlights from the third amazing workshop in Uganda, hosted in collaboration between Girl Up Artemis and PEACE for Women-WEST NILE.

This time, we brought together young girls to talk about Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and community prevention. We explored what gender-based violence means, how it affects individuals and communities, and the important role girls and young women can play in raising awareness, preventing violence, and supporting safer and more inclusive communities.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, shared their thoughts, and contributed to making this space so meaningful. We are proud of the conversations we are creating together, and we are just getting started!
