If you have back pain and your knees, ankles or shoulders have started to bother you too, it may not be a separate problem. Sometimes you don’t even notice the connection.

A back that has been held for a long time often doesn’t stay a back problem. What lies below it starts to lose something. Not so much strength as quality: sensation, awareness, control, movement free of effort. Slowly, those fade.

So the back is never the whole story. In the Grinberg Method we call this detecting and tracking: following a pattern down the legs and the arms to everywhere it has reached, so the whole of it can be worked with, not only the place that hurts.

Patterns like this often took years to form, sometimes since childhood, so working through them alone isn’t always simple. We have trained practitioners all over the world who work with exactly this, you can find one near you on our website.

This is the kind of thing we teach, how to find where you hold, and how to let it go.

Anger you learned not to show doesn’t disappear, it goes somewhere. Very often it goes straight into the jaw: clenched, tight and aching for “no reason”. Usually you don’t even notice it.

In the Grinberg Method we call this holding the anger instead of feeling it, the muscle keeps doing the job the anger was never allowed to do. Agreeing to feel it on purpose, even intensifying it for a moment instead of pushing it back down, can help to release it.

Back pain, a stiff neck, a headache that comes back every afternoon. Most people have a first response to a familiar ache, and it happens so fast it usually goes unnoticed.

Holding the breath, tightening, getting busy: these are all ways of pushing through. They feel like coping. They are also effort, spent fighting the pain every time it returns, sometimes for years.

That’s why the slides ask for so little. One response, caught as it happens. What you learn to stop isn’t the ache itself, it’s the extra work of fighting it. Many people only realise how much effort the pushing took once they begin to let it go.

Most of us when we have a pain we tighten around it. In this case the arm and neck contracts and breath becomes shallow. Releasing that contraction can often trigger a strong flow of energy in the body as well. Specially if that pain holds emotional charge.

We call this “agreeing to the pain”, which means breathing and relaxing around the pain instead of fighting against it. The more someone agrees to the pain, the more the body starts to work on its own.

Nobody knows a body better than the body itself. So the skill here isn’t fixing a shoulder. It’s learning to create the conditions where the body can take the energy it was spending against the pain and use it to release it.

This is the kind of thing we teach: how to stop fighting what the body is doing, and let it work.

Controlling anger isn’t the opposite of losing it. It’s the other half of the same fight, and it keeps the anger locked in the body.

Many people who learned to keep their emotions in check still carry them every day. They rise from the belly, and something pushes it back down, through the shoulders, the base of the throat, the diaphragm. One side is the anger. The other is the command to control it. Each is right in its own way, so neither ever wins and the fight never ends.

Letting go of control doesn’t mean letting the anger explode. Holding it down and acting it out are the same mistake: both treat anger as something to manage instead of something to feel.

The way out is working with the split between the two. First make both sides stronger on purpose, more anger and more control, until the pattern is completely on the surface. Then, once it’s built up to maximum, drop the efforts all at once. What was held down can release like a spring, and what arrives is often not rage but relief, a clearer head, and the simple feeling of being back.

This is a skill you can learn: find where you hold, intensify it intentionally, then stop. You don’t lose the ability to control. You just suddenly have a choice over it.

Patterns like this can often take years to form, so working through them alone isn’t always simple. We have trained practitioners all over the world who work with exactly this, you can find one near you on our website.

If your shoulder has been tight for years, or your back stiff for as long as you can remember, the problem may not stay where it started. Usually you don’t even notice it spreading.

Think of energy in the body as the water in an irrigation system. When one channel is blocked, the place beyond it doesn’t get water. Nothing breaks overnight. The tissue there slowly loses quality: it doesn’t flow as well, and it doesn’t clean itself as well. What goes is not so much quantity as quality. Sensation, awareness, control, movement free of effort.

That’s why a back problem is rarely only in the back. The place that hurts is where the block shows. What it cuts off can show up further along, in the shoulders, the arms, the knees, the ankles.

In the Grinberg Method we call this detecting and tracking: following the block through the body and bringing it to the surface, where you can actually feel it. Then you breathe into it and let the body relax around it, so it can start to let go and things can begin to flow again.

Most of what feels automatic: reactions, habits, the way someone braces or pulls away, wasn’t always there. It was learned, usually early, and usually through repetition.

To get rid of it, we need to unlearn. Not adding something new, but getting rid of what got picked up along the way, through the body.

This isn’t about the fast, structural reflexes that protect you in an instant, like a hand pulling back from something hot. It’s the patterns that build up after intense repeated experience. How someone contracts, avoids, or holds their breath around certain feelings. Those were learned, which means they can be unlearned too.

This is the kind of thing we teach, how to unlearn a reaction instead of just managing it.

A pain doesn’t always stays where it started. If you hurt a foot, and it’s suddenly natural to start guarding it: moving it less, feeling it less, shifting the weight to the other side. A month later the lower back can start to ache, and it’s easy to never connect the two.

So the message isn’t always about the place that hurts now. Sometimes it’s about how we reacted to a pain that came before.

In the Grinberg Method we call this agreeing to the pain: going toward the sensation instead of bracing against it, so there’s room to notice what it’s actually pointing at.

Patterns like this often took years to form, sometimes since childhood, so working through them alone isn’t always simple. We have trained practitioners all over the world who work with exactly this. Send us a message and we’ll point you to one near you.

This is the kind of thing we teach: how to hear what a pain is saying, instead of only fighting it.

Tension held for a long time rarely leaves slowly. More often it holds and holds, until the moment it’s finally allowed to move, and then it goes all at once.

In the Grinberg Method we call this letting the body work, not fighting the release once it starts, just staying with it as it happens. Fight it, and the same tension repeats itself, sometimes for years. Let it move, and the body can change in seconds.

If healing feels like it’s taking forever, or a part of you doesn’t believe real change is possible, the slow part usually isn’t the body.
In the Grinberg Method, web believe the body itself can shift fast, often within a single session, once real attention reaches it. What actually moves slowly is the belief that a change like that is possible and that belief isn’t something that just catches up on its own. It’s worked with directly, the same as the body.
That’s why the work starts by approaching the body directly, without deciding in advance what it can and can’t do and finding out, in real time, what it’s actually capable of.
This is the kind of thing we teach: how to work with the body directly, without assuming its limits in advance.
