There are moments in life that seem insignificant at the time, but years later you realise they were quietly showing you who you were becoming.
This picture represents one of those moments from Out of the Shadows.
During lifeboat training, the guys decided to have a little fun at my expense. They left me sitting on a buoy in the estuary and teasingly sailed away! ๐
I can laugh about it now and it's one of the memories I share in my book. My time on the lifeboat came to mean something much deeper to me.
At a time when parts of my own life were falling apart, the lifeboat gave me purpose.
When that pager went off, my own problems had to be put to one side. Somebody else might need help. Somebody might be frightened, injured, stranded or desperately waiting for someone to come.
And I wanted to be that person who came.
I began to realise something about myself: no matter what I was going through personally, I wanted to help other people.
Perhaps, in some ways, helping others helped to save a part of me too.
That desire has never left me. It followed me from the lifeboat into my spiritual work, my teaching, my readings and eventually into writing Out of the Shadows.
The way I help people may have changed over the years, but the reason behind it hasn't.
I don't want anyone to feel that they have to face their darkest moments alone.
Out of the Shadows โ From Despair to Self-Acceptance and Love tells the story behind the person I am today โ including some of the funny, frightening and deeply personal moments that helped shape me.
