🌧️ Grey skies? Still get outside.

Even when it’s rainy, dull and cloudy, we’re still receiving light from the sky.

And this matters because modern life has us spending far too much time in boxes — our homes, cars, offices, gyms… surrounded by artificial light and often very little natural light.

Your eyes and skin are constantly taking in information from the light around you, and that light helps communicate with your body’s internal clock — influencing things like sleep, energy, cortisol and your hormones.

And as we move through our 40s, 50s and beyond, supporting these daily rhythms becomes even more important.

So don’t wait for sunshine. ☀️

🌅 Get outside in the morning
🌤️ Get some daylight around lunchtime
🌇 And, if you can, get outside again towards the end of the day.

Even a grey, rainy day counts.

Your body doesn’t need perfect weather. It needs natural light. 💛

🌫️ Misty morning? Don’t let the frizz stop you! 😂

Yes, this is the kind of weather that ruins your hair the second you step outside… but there’s something much more important happening.

Even through mist and fog, you’re still getting natural light into your eyes and onto your skin. Those light signals are communicating with your cells and helping to regulate systems involved in your circadian rhythm, stress response and hormones.

This is one of the fascinating areas of quantum biology.

So if you work indoors all day, try to get outside in the morning — even when the weather isn’t perfect.

🌅 And on a really misty or cloudy morning, give yourself a little longer. 15–20 minutes outside is a great habit to aim for.

Your hair might be a complete disaster… 😂
but your biology will thank you. 💛

🌞 There’s another reason I love getting outside in the morning…

About 1–2 hours after sunrise, as the sun rises higher in the sky, the light changes. UV-A and blue wavelengths increase — and this is another important signal for your biology.

For women in their 40s, 50s and beyond, this is particularly interesting because light is one of the cues that helps regulate our circadian rhythm, hormones and neurotransmitters.

Morning light can also support:
✨ Nitric oxide — helping blood flow and healthy blood pressure
✨ Beta-endorphins — supporting mood and potentially helping with cravings and pain perception
✨ Lipotropins — involved in fat metabolism
✨ Healthy circadian signalling — helping your body know what time it is and what it should be doing

And this is why I keep banging on about getting outside in natural light. 🌅

It’s not just about getting some fresh air or taking the dog for a walk (although that’s a bonus!). You’re giving your body information that can influence your energy, sleep, mood, metabolism and hormonal rhythms.

And during menopause, when so much is changing, those everyday lifestyle signals really matter.

💛 Want to learn more about nutrition and lifestyle and how you can enhance these signals to support yourself through menopause?

Drop me a DM — I’d love to help.

🌅 Don’t underestimate the power of sunrise.

As women in our 40s, 50s and beyond, supporting our biology becomes increasingly important — and one of the simplest things we can do is get outside and see natural morning light.

At sunrise, when the sun is low on the horizon, the light is particularly rich in red and infrared wavelengths.

These wavelengths send important signals to our cells and nervous system, supporting mitochondrial function, energy production and the body’s natural rhythms.

And it’s not just about sunrise. Natural light throughout the day helps keep our internal body clock — and the hormones and processes it controls — properly timed.

So before reaching for your phone, coffee or starting the day…

Step outside. Look towards the morning sky. Let your eyes experience natural light. 🌅

It’s free, simple and one of the easiest ways to support your biology every single day.

Our bodies are guided by our circadian rhythm — an internal 24-hour clock responding to light, darkness and other circadian cues. 🌙

At different times of the day, different hormones and biological processes come into play. Cortisol rises in the morning to help us wake and mobilise energy, while later in the day our body temperature, insulin, cholesterol and triglycerides follow their own rhythms. As night falls, melatonin, TSH and growth hormone become more prominent as the body moves towards rest, repair and recovery.

And this matters for hormonal balance, particularly as we move through our 40s and 50s. Our hormones don’t work in isolation — they’re part of a finely timed system.

Supporting your body clock can help support healthy patterns of cortisol, sleep, blood sugar regulation and the wider hormonal environment.

One of the simplest things you can do?

Get outside and experience natural light, especially in the morning.

The changing light throughout the day provides information to our cells, helping them understand what time it is and what they should be doing.

Think of light as a signal — your biology is constantly reading the code. 🌅

A little bit excited about this! 🥒

Ian on the market has messaged me to say he’s got marrows — and I’m off to get them! 🙌

It’s unusual to find them at the end of September, so I’m definitely seizing the opportunity. Probably the last marrows of the year!

Marrows are a great low-carb vegetable, providing fibre, potassium, vitamin C and antioxidants, and they’re lovely and hydrating too.

I’ll be steaming mine and serving it with plenty of butter and black pepper alongside my roast on Sunday. 🧈🤍

Simple, seasonal and delicious!
