Onslow always had a brilliant way of looking at life, and this has to be one of his funniest lines from Keeping Up Appearances.

After winning a luxury cruise competition with Daisy, most people would be delighted to be invited to dine at the Captain’s table. Not Onslow.

Instead, he summed it up perfectly with: “I mean, you win a competition, you get a luxury cruise and then they expect you to eat with the crew!” It’s classic Onslow – completely misunderstanding the privilege while delivering the line with absolute conviction.

The 1993 Christmas special, filmed aboard the QE2, is packed with memorable moments, but this gag is right up there with the best. Geoffrey Hughes played Onslow so effortlessly that even the simplest one-liner became unforgettable.

Alison Steadman has created two of the most iconic characters in British television.

Long before she became the wonderfully dramatic Pam Shipman in Gavin & Stacey, Alison Steadman captivated audiences as Beverly Moss in Abigail's Party.

Her unforgettable performance earned her the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in 1978, cementing Beverly's place as one of the greatest comedy characters ever created.

More than 30 years later, Alison introduced us to another unforgettable character in Pam Shipman. With her hilarious one-liners, dramatic reactions and heartfelt moments with Mick, Pam quickly became one of the most loved characters in Gavin & Stacey.

Fans still can't get enough of both performances.

Beverly remains the role that first brought Alison widespread acclaim, while Pam introduced her to a whole new generation of viewers who instantly fell in love with her.

I still remember exactly where I was when the news broke. It felt like a mistake. Rik Mayall was too loud, too fast, and too aggressively alive to just be gone.

Looking back at Bottom, it’s easy to focus on the frying pans, the groin kicks, and the absolute destruction of the Hammersmith flat. But underneath all that violent slapstick was a genuine, desperate humanity. Richie and Eddie were tragic figures trapped together, and Rik played Richie’s pathetic, frantic need to be loved with a vulnerability that nobody ever gave him enough credit for.

He didn’t just give us laughs; he gave us a manic energy that defined an entire era of British comedy. We didn’t appreciate what we had until the silence hit.

It still gets me that we’ll never see him do something new. His electric comedy will never be recreated, and that genuinely makes me sad.
