A.A. Milne:
“What day is it?” asked Pooh.
“It’s today,” squeaked Piglet.
“My favourite day,” said Pooh.
Horses have a lot to teach us about being present because they don’t get caught up in the past or worry about the future. They respond to what is happening right now.
This is one of the reasons horses can bring such depth to therapeutic and personal development work.
A horse doesn’t ask you to become someone else before it will connect with you. It doesn’t judge who you are, what you’ve been through or who you think you should be. They simply respond to who you are in that moment.
And that response can be incredibly revealing.
Horses give us what I call clean feedback. They respond to our energy, body language, intention and congruence. Often they reflect something we haven't yet recognised in ourselves such as a tendency to hold back, seek approval, struggle with boundaries, disconnect from our feelings or try to control an outcome.
Their feedback is not analytical; it is purely a response to what is actually happening. And that can create a powerful moment of awareness. Because we can’t change what we can’t see.
Once a behaviour or limiting belief that has been operating unconsciously becomes visible, we have a choice. We can continue in the same way, or we can begin to do something differently.
Perhaps one of the most beautiful things about this work is that, in the presence of horses, people feel safe enough to stop performing. To let go of who they think they should be and become more curious about who they actually are.
That is where real change begins, not by becoming someone new, but by becoming more fully ourselves.
Which brings us back to Pooh:
“What day is it?”
“It’s today.”
“My favourite day.”
What would it mean to make today your favourite day; not because everything is perfect, but because you are fully present to however it unfolds?
