There have been several articles in the press and media recently promoting Organ Donation Week. This year its more important than ever to register your choice: donation rates are now more than 9% below this time last year and the transplant waiting list continues to rise with almost 9000 people nationally waiting for a life saving organ.
Family consent rates have dropped from 67% in 2020/21 to 57% last year, resulting in hundreds of missed opportunities for transplants. Families support donation 90% of the time when they know their loved one’s decision, but this falls to around 50% when no decision is known. Donation cannot proceed without family support, making recorded decisions critical, so its vitally important to make your family know your decision.
Below you can find a link to Organ Donation Scotland where you can find out more information and most importantly a link to register - it only takes 2 minutes.
Pictured are Specialist nurses Lynne Malley and Claire Moir who were in attendance at the concourse in Ninewells today.

Call to participate in research on patient access to kidney transplantation!
A team from the University of Dundee are currently running a research study looking into people's perspectives and experiences around kidney transplantation.
They want to understand people's experiences of the process of being considered for, and leading up to, having a kidney transplant.
You would be able to participate in this research if you have ever spoken about having a kidney transplant with a member of the renal team (even if you have not had a kidney transplant), and are a patient under the care of the renal team in NHS Tayside.
To find out more about this study, please speak to your doctor or nurse in clinic, or get in touch with the research team:

Meet Claire Moir, a specialist transplant nurse who supports people considering living kidney donation.

Claire helps donors navigate every stage of the process, ensuring they have the information, reassurance and support they need. Her key message is simple - living donation can transform lives, but donor wellbeing always comes first.

Claire explains, “Living kidney donation can be life-changing as it can offer recipients better health and, importantly, an improved quality of life. There is a lot to consider before becoming a living donor and I support people considering living kidney donation by helping guide them through the assessment process, providing information, reassurance and ongoing support at every step of their journey."

The National Kidney Patient Survey (aka the "PREM") started yesterday.
This is your chance to feedback to us your thoughts and feelings about the care you receive from the Renal Service; it lets us know what we're doing well but most importantly it highlights areas where we need to improve.
Paper copies of the survey are available in your unit/clinic and the link below will open the online version of the survey.

This Monday the 14th sees the start of the National Kidney Patient Survey, previously known as the "PREM". The survey covers the whole of the UK and gives patients the opportunity to provide feedback on how they feel about their care. Just as importantly the results inform the team how their patients feel about their care and where improvements can be made. It also allows the UKRR to build up a national picture of peoples' experience of their care.

The survey can be completed on line, a link will be posted here next week, and paper copies will be made available at the units, just ask your nurse or doctor for a copy.

Once more, please take a few minutes to respond, your opinion matters.

Thank you

NHS Tayside would like to make you aware of Kidney Beam, an online exercise and lifestyle platform for people living with kidney disease, including polycystic kidney disease, dialysis patients, transplant patients, and people with other forms of kidney disease.
Your clinical team may offer you a referral to Kidney Beam as an optional source of support. Participation is entirely your choice.
Kidney Beam provides access to a 12-week online programme of exercise and education, together with health coaching support. The programme aims to help people improve physical activity levels, learn more about diet and lifestyle, and develop confidence in managing their condition.

Being physically active may help support physical and mental wellbeing and may help people living with kidney disease maintain their overall health.

If you decide you would like to take part, your clinical team at NHS Tayside can help you register with the Kidney Beam website and health coaching service.
Once registered, a Kidney Beam health coach will contact you by email (please check your junk mail folder) to arrange an introductory telephone appointment.
Following this appointment, Kidney Beam will suggest exercise and education options based on your health status and level of ability.
Online classes can be completed at home, at times that suit you.

If you have any questions about Kidney Beam, speak to your medical professional who will be able to help.

Finally we have Lyn, a transplant patient who not only was competing in the British Transplant Games in Sheffield recently but she won a gold medal in tennis !
Although Lyn is a Tayside patient she is also a member of the Edinburgh Adults Transplant Team. In fact she is the only Tayside patient in the team and is keen to encourage more taysiders to join her. You don't have to be a recipient, donors, carers and supporters can take part too.
Next years games take place in Birmingham at the end of August, Lyn has said she would be happy to speak to anyone who is considering taking part.
In her own words: "It is such an enjoyable and inspiring event, paying tribute to donors and raising awareness of the benefits of the gift of life."
