Apparently I’m now living with a toddler who demands breakfast the minute I wake up.

The toddler is my stoma. 😂💩

If I don’t eat fairly soon after getting up, Paloma starts pumping out watery output like she’s staging a protest.

“Morning, shall we—”
“BREAKFAST.”
“I’ll just do this fir—”
“RELEASE THE FLOODGATES.” 🌊🤣

Feed her, and things tend to settle down.

Turns out there’s an actual explanation for this little performance.

Even when we haven’t eaten, there are still fluids and digestive juices moving through our gut. After a night without food, there’s less solid material in the mix. And with an ileostomy, there’s no colon doing that final bit of water absorption.

So morning output can be much more watery. Eating regularly can help, and output often thickens as the day goes on.

An empty stomach doesn’t necessarily mean an empty bag. Who knew? 🙃

For me, breakfast seems to help keep Her Majesty happy. Apparently we’re both easier to live with once we’ve been fed. 😂👑

Quick sensible bit: a short morning splutter is different from ongoing, unusually high watery output. If it keeps going, or you’re dizzy, thirsty or weeing less than usual, speak to your stoma team—dehydration needs attention. ❤️
