Before you pay to rip up your bedroom carpet, start with the bed.

If you have a dust mite allergy, the bed is where you’re most exposed. Encase the mattress, pillows and duvet, and wash your bedding at 60°C. It costs far less than new flooring, and it’s usually where the itching and morning sneezing start.

You can't allergy-proof an 8-year-old, and honestly you should not try.

You are never going to turn a child's bedroom into a sterile lab. Kids love their toys and refuse to give them away, and that is completely normal. So the goal is not no toys, it is fewer things out in the open collecting dust.

Here is the compromise that actually works. Soft toys get frozen once a month to kill the dust mites, and everything else lives behind a door, in cupboards and boxes, off the open surfaces and off the bed. Dust cannot settle on what it cannot reach.

You do not need perfection. You need most of it stored away. Not allergic to your pet? The dust mites still are.

Here is the part most people miss. Your allergy test can come back negative for cat and dog, so you assume the pet is not the problem. But pet dander is not just an allergen in its own right, it is also food for dust mites.

So even if you are not allergic to your cat, the mites living in your mattress absolutely are, and they thrive on the dander she leaves behind. If your cat sleeps on or under the bed, she is feeding the exact thing that is making you itch.

Your child might be carrying their allergy into the house every single day, on their clothes.

Here is a free experiment to test it. For one week, have them change into a fresh set of clothes the moment they get home. That way, whatever they have picked up outside, pollen, dust, or pet dander from other places, stays at the door instead of coming into the house and onto the furniture and the bed.

You deep cleaned the whole room and nothing changed. That is actually your answer.

A deep clean shifts surface dust. It does not reach the dust mites living inside your mattress, pillows and duvet, and that is where the allergen you breathe in for eight hours a night comes from. If cleaning changed nothing, the bed is the part still untreated.

Check the label before you blame the bed.

Before you assume your symptoms are dust mites, take a look at your laundry detergent. I've seen this affect a lot of people. Biological detergent contains enzymes designed to break down stains, but those same strong chemicals can irritate the skin, especially overnight when you're wrapped in freshly washed bedding for hours.

One person told me the bio was so harsh that even she couldn't use it, and she doesn't have sensitive skin. My own approach is simple: I use a non-bio detergent, or I just put vinegar in the washing machine.

One rainy afternoon can undo a whole week of running your dehumidifier.

If you use one for dust mites, this matters: it only really works if humidity stays below 50% all day, every day. Dust mites take about two hours to fully rehydrate, so if it stays dry for 22 hours but spikes above 50% for just two, that short window is enough for them, and the whole day's work is undone.

The rule is simple: below 50%, all day, every day.

Your protector can't stop this one. 🪶

A lot of people are allergic to feathers without realising it, and here's the part most miss: a dust mite is around 200 microns, but a feather allergen can be just one or two. That's roughly a hundred times smaller.

Standard protectors are built for dust mites, so a feather allergen can pass straight through. If your duvet or pillows are feather-filled and you're still reacting, the protector isn't the fix. Swapping to a non-feather duvet is.

She did everything right, and her son is still sick.

This mum did more than almost anyone I speak to. Dust mite proof bedding, a dehumidifier, an air purifier, a HEPA vacuum. She pulled up the carpets, threw out the cushions, even got rid of upholstered furniture. And still no real improvement.

Here's what I told her: when someone is doing 98% of the right things and still seeing no result, for me that's usually a sign it isn't only a dust mite allergy. It could be something else, a pet allergy, a reaction to washing powder, or another trigger in the room. Knowing when it's not dust mites saves months of chasing the wrong thing.
