Chartered Counselling & Coaching Psychologist offering ADHD-informed coaching, therapy, wellbeing support, and psychologically-informed approaches to sustainable change, self-understanding, and burnout recovery.

The real reason that viral productivity hack failed you… 👇

Simple answers get views. But human psychology is rarely that simple.

When a 15-second hack doesn’t resolve years of burnout or executive-functioning difficulties,
it’s easy to blame yourself: I just need more discipline.

But the advice may have been too simplistic for what you’re dealing with.

With long waits for NHS support and private care beyond many people’s reach, it makes sense
to look online for answers. You deserve more than sensational claims: grounded, evidence-informed strategies, and compassion for yourself when things feel difficult.

I’m a Chartered Psychologist sharing practical tools to help you understand your brain and find approaches that work for you.

Follow along for thoughtful psychology, without the algorithm noise.

I wrote a short blog on why I’m choosing to share these tools openly and what ethical psychological content should look like.

If the same ADHD difficulty keeps happening, repeating the same reminder more firmly probably isn’t going to change much.

Sometimes the most useful thing we can do is stop focusing on the behaviour for a moment and look at the process underneath it.

Does remembering need to be made external?

Does the task need a smaller starting point?

Does an impulsive decision need a built-in pause?

Does the person need support to create a system they can eventually manage themselves?

That last part matters.

Supporting someone with ADHD doesn’t mean becoming their organiser, diary, manager or safety net for every consequence. The aim is to find strategies that make things more workable while still protecting autonomy, accountability and healthy boundaries.

And that can apply whether you’re a partner, parent, friend, colleague or manager.
Save this one for the next time you find yourself thinking, “But we’ve talked about this so many times…”

I’ve gone into much more detail in this week’s article, How to Support Someone with ADHD: What Actually Helps. I’ll put the link in the comments.

Sometimes the most damaging misunderstandings happen when difficulty gets mistaken for lack of effort.

Someone can care deeply, genuinely intend to do something and still struggle to translate that intention into action.

And when the response they repeatedly receive is frustration, criticism or “you just need to try harder”, it can leave a much bigger mark than the original difficulty.

For many adults with ADHD, there are already years of:

✨ feeling they should be coping better
✨ wondering why apparently simple things feel so difficult
✨ working twice as hard to appear capable
✨ carrying shame about repeatedly “letting people down”

Good ADHD support isn’t about removing responsibility or taking over someone’s life.

It’s about understanding what is actually getting in the way, then finding strategies that support greater autonomy, accountability and self-understanding, without adding another layer of shame.

And sometimes those of us doing the supporting have some unlearning to do too. ❤️

I’ve written much more about what genuinely helps: for partners, parents, friends, families and workplaces. In this week’s blog: How to Support Someone with ADHD: What Actually Helps.

The hardest part of an ADHD waiting list isn’t the time. It’s the guilt.

When you’re stuck in diagnostic limbo, it’s easy to feel like you aren't "allowed" to use neurodivergent accommodations yet. You tell yourself to just push through, mask harder, or wait until an assessment makes it official.

Here is your clinical reminder: you do not need a piece of paper to validate your day-to-day challenges.

Strategies, nervous system regulation, and self-compassion don't require a formal diagnosis; they require permission from yourself to work with your brain instead of against it.

Swipe through for 5 practical ways to support yourself while you wait, and save this post for the days when diagnostic fatigue sets in.

A coroner recently issued a formal warning: without urgent action on multi-year ADHD assessment waiting lists, more preventable deaths will occur.

When adults, especially high-functioning women and professionals, reach the point of seeking an assessment, they are often already near burnout.

Being told to wait 3 to 5 years with zero guidance sends a dangerous message: that your distress doesn’t qualify for support until a system validates it.

As a psychologist, here is what I want you to know:

1. You don’t need an official diagnosis to start using ADHD-informed strategies.

2. Accommodating your executive functioning is not “cheating”, it’s essential self-care.

3. Your exhaustion is real, regardless of where you sit on a waiting list.

I’ve broken down the systemic issue and practical steps to support your brain during diagnostic limbo in my latest blog: ‘The Real Cost of Questioning ADHD: Why People Need Support While They Wait’

20 years, multiple salons, and one sacred rule: never give up your oasis.

When you carry high mental load and responsibility all week, your nervous system rarely gets true passive rest, moments where no one is asking you for answers, decisions, or emotional output.

She did my wedding hair years ago, she listens without judgment, and for a couple of hours every few months, I get total permission to just sit, read, chat, and be looked after.

It’s not an indulgence, it’s nervous system maintenance.

Do you have a regular appointment or ritual that secretly protects your mental health?

ADHD assessment is not just a clinical decision.

It can also be a financial, practical and emotional one.

Private assessment may involve more than the initial fee. There can be follow-up costs, medication reviews, uncertainty around shared care, and sometimes a lot to process emotionally if you do receive a diagnosis.

That doesn’t mean assessment isn’t worthwhile.

It means it is reasonable to think carefully about why you want it, what you hope it will give you, and whether now is the right time.

And if you decide not to pursue assessment right now, that does not mean you have to stay stuck.

You can still experiment with ADHD-informed strategies, make changes to your environment, reduce unnecessary demands and seek support for the difficulties you are experiencing.

Swipe through for some of the questions and practical considerations that may help you decide what feels right for you.

I’ve gone into much more detail in my latest article:
