This Sunday at 2am, the clocks go back.
Most of the country turns over and gets an extra hour in bed.
If you’re on nights in a care home, you get the same hour. You just spend it at work. The hour between one and two happens twice, so a twelve-hour shift becomes thirteen. Same floor, same call bells, one more hour of the quietest part of the night.
Nobody marks it. It isn’t written into the rota as anything special. It comes round once a year and the people on shift simply get on with it, the way they get on with most things nobody notices.
So to everyone working Saturday night into Sunday morning: thank you. Enjoy the hour whenever you finally get it.
