We are very fond of Hagi ware here, and this shira-hagi yunomi from Senryuzan is a lovely example of it.
Senryuzan have been making pottery in Hagi since 1826. Everything is thrown by hand, the clay and glazes are made in house, and the pieces are fired in a traditional climbing kiln. The soft white glaze has fine crackles running through it, and with use the tea seeps in and the cup gradually changes colour and character. It is one of the things that makes Hagi ware so loved for tea, and it is why an old Hagi cup is often treasured more than a new one.
This cup is available in the shop now. We also have some new work from Senryuzan on its way to us following the trip, which we look forward to sharing with you soon 🍵
