What can a skin texture scan actually tell us?
When we look at skin texture, we’re looking beyond simply asking whether skin appears “smooth” or “rough”.
A full assessment of the skin’s surface, helps us to better understand differences in smoothness, firmness and evenness and how these may change over time.
But there is never one single reason for the way our skin looks....
🧬 Genetics
Our genetic makeup influences factors such as pore appearance, pigmentation, collagen and elastin structure, and how our skin naturally ages. This means that everyone’s baseline skin texture is different.
⏳ Ageing
As we age, collagen and elastin production changes, cell turnover can slow and the skin’s ability to retain moisture can decrease. These changes can contribute to differences in firmness, fine lines and overall texture.
🧴 Skincare
What we put on our skin matters. A well considered skincare routine can support hydration, cell turnover and the skin barrier. Equally, too much exfoliation or using products that are too harsh for your skin can cause irritation and compromise barrier function.
🌍 Environmental exposure
UV radiation, pollution, climate and other environmental stressors can influence pigmentation, dehydration, inflammation and the visible signs of skin ageing.
And this brings us back to something fundamental: the skin barrier.
A healthy skin barrier helps maintain hydration and provides protection against external stressors. Supporting that barrier is an important foundation for healthy looking, resilient skin.
As medical aesthetic practitioners our responsibility is to help you understand your skin.
To explain what may be contributing to its appearance, identify what your skin needs, and help you make informed choices about skincare and aesthetic treatments rather than chasing unrealistic ideas of “perfect” skin.
Because good skin health starts with understanding the skin you have, not comparing it to someone else’s. 🤍
