✨A wee change of day for Milk Circle this week!

I’ve squeezed a little one into the photography diary on Friday, so we’re moving Milk Circle to Thursday 22 October.

Same warm welcome, a cuppa and a chance to chat about feeding and life with your baby. Whether you’re breast or bottle feeding or pregnant, you’re very welcome.

Pop Thursday in your diary and let any friends know who were planning to come on Friday 🤍

👋🏻Oh look, there I am, chatting about one of my favourite subjects!

These photographs are from our Warrior Womben workshop, where I spent time helping mums prepare for feeding their babies.

There’s so much to think about when you’re pregnant, and feeding deserves a wee space in those preparations too.

If you’d like to join me, my next antenatal feeding class is a relaxed morning in my garden studio in Innerleithen. We’ll chat about:

What to expect from feeding in the early days.

How your milk supply works.

Getting comfortable with positioning and attachment.

How to tell your baby is getting enough milk.

Where to find support if things feel tricky.

There’s plenty of time for questions, and you don’t need to know anything before you come.

Breastfeeding is a learned skill, and you deserve the chance to learn too.

✨ Milk Circle is on tomorrow!

Come along to the studio in Innerleithen between 10:30 and 12 for a cuppa, a chat and some feeding support. It’s free, and you’re welcome however you’re feeding your baby.

Tonight I’m doing a bit of extra learning all about thrush, which I’m actually quite excited about. Always more to learn in this job!

Hope to see some of you tomorrow.

💞How did your partner support your feeding journey?

It can make such a difference having someone beside you who understands what you need, whether that’s bringing you a drink, making sure you’ve eaten, taking care of everything else for a while, or simply reminding you that you’re doing a good job.

I’d love to hear what helped you. Pop it in the comments below 👇

💦Is your milk coming a little too quickly?

A fast let down can sometimes make feeding feel quite chaotic.

In the early days, your milk supply is still regulating. Your body is essentially producing very generously while it learns what your baby actually needs, so a fast or forceful let down can be really common at this stage.

Baby might gulp, cough, splutter, pull away, click, or seem like they’re struggling to keep up with the flow.

One thing that can really help is changing position. A more laid back position uses gravity to slow things down a little and can give baby more control over the milk flow.

For many people, things settle as supply regulates and baby gets bigger and more able to manage the flow.
If feeds are regularly difficult or you’re unsure what’s going on, get some feeding support so the whole feed can be looked at properly.

✨How do you know when baby has finished feeding?

Your baby will usually give you little clues.

They may come off the breast by themselves, look relaxed and settled afterwards, and their hands and body may soften as the feed comes to an end.

Once baby has finished on the first breast, always offer the second. They may take it, they may only have a little, or they may not want it at that moment, but it is still worth offering.

The main thing is to watch your baby and follow their cues rather than expecting every feed to look exactly the same.
Some feeds will be longer, some shorter, and that can all be completely normal.

Why does my newborn want to feed ALL the time?

One of the things I hear so often from new mums is, “Surely they can’t be hungry again?”

But in those early weeks, frequent feeding is completely normal.

Newborns have small tummies, breast milk is easily digested, and babies don’t only come to the breast for food. Feeding also gives them comfort, closeness and helps them regulate.

Then there’s cluster feeding, when it can feel like baby has barely finished one feed before they’re asking for another.

It can be intense, but frequent feeding on its own doesn’t mean your milk supply is low or that something is wrong.

It’s always about looking at the whole picture: how baby is feeding, nappies, weight gain and how they are generally.

And if you find yourself wondering, “Is this actually normal?” Drop me a DM!

That’s exactly what feeding support is there for. 🤍

I had a lovely mentoring session with my cohort today, and it was so nice to touch base before everyone signs off for the summer.

It was also a really good reminder that support matters for all of us, even when you are the person usually supporting everyone else.

So this is just a little reminder that I am still here over the summer.

I am available for breastfeeding support, bottle feeding support, antenatal preparation and those moments when you simply need reassurance that what is happening is normal.

You do not need to wait until feeding feels completely overwhelming before asking for help.

And I think it is definitely time to get the next Bump to Baby Feeding Class into the diary.

Details coming very soon.
