People often assume they're exhausted after spending time with others because they're introverted, antisocial, or simply with the wrong people.

Sometimes that's true.

Sometimes, though, the exhaustion comes from everything happening around the interaction. You're trying to get things right, worrying about what people are thinking, and then going over the whole thing again afterwards to make sure you didn't mess it up.

When a lot of energy goes into managing other people's experience of us, it's easy to see why socialising can leave us feeling exhausted.

I've written more about belonging, acceptance and the hidden effort that can sit underneath everyday life in my article, Why Do I Feel Like I Don't Belong, Even When I Have Everything?

You can find it on my website, where you'll also find an option to arrange a free chat if the time feels right https://rewiretherapy.co.uk/blog/

Scottish Borders ADHD-ers, I would urge you to grab this free opportunity with both hands. A fully funded course and community around ADHD presented by trusted, knowledgable facilitators with lived experience is worth its weight in gold. Let me know if you’re going.

The cat regularly joins me and the dog on our walks.
He seems entirely unconcerned about whether he belongs there.

Which got me thinking about how much time humans can spend worrying about exactly that.

For ADHD-ers and other neurodivergent people in particular, belonging can sometimes start to feel like something that has to be earned rather than experienced.

That's what this week's blog explores:
Why do I feel like I don't belong, even when I have everything?

I've spent the weekend at Manchester Mindfulness Festival as both an attendee and a supporting organisation through Rewire Therapy, and it's been a fantastic experience.

Saturday's talks were engaging, thought-provoking and deeply grounded, while today's retreat day offered exactly the kind of space and practice I needed.

Having attended in person last year, I was curious about the move online. What stood out was how many people were able to join who otherwise couldn't have attended. The accessibility felt like a real strength.

Spending time with mindfulness teachers and practitioners from around the world was a powerful reminder that we're not practising alone. What we do, think and say matters, and it ripples outwards in ways we rarely get to see.

Huge thanks to Christoph Spiessens and Ed Cutler, the volunteers, speakers and facilitators who made the festival possible. Some joined from the other side of the world and got up in the middle of the night to be there. That commitment doesn't go unnoticed.

A wonderful weekend and a lovely reminder of what this community is all about.

Esther Estey, PhD from the Institute for Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy has been sharing speaker spotlights for the upcoming Expanding the Circle: Inclusive Mindfulness for Diverse Minds & Nervous Systems workshop, and this week it was my turn.

I'm looking forward to contributing to what promises to be a thoughtful and practical conversation about neurodiversity-affirming contemplative practice for ADHD, autism and acquired brain injury.

The workshop brings together clinicians, researchers, mindfulness teachers and people with lived experience from across a range of disciplines and perspectives. I'll be joining Christoph Spiessens and an excellent international faculty to explore how mindfulness can be taught and practised in ways that better support a variety of minds and nervous systems.

Very grateful to Esther and the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy for the invitation, and looking forward to November. See links for information and registration in the comments.

For World Mental Health Day, people often think about diagnosis and treatment.
And those things matter. But what I find people often want is much simpler than that. A bit of relief, a bit of peace, a moment to feel OK without having to change a thing right there and then.

We can't always make everything okay, but we can build resources that help us carry what's difficult. That's something therapy and mindfulness can help with.

If you'd like support with building resources for the difficult bits, you're welcome to visit my website. You'll find an option there to arrange a free introductory Zoom call if the time feels right https://rewiretherapy.co.uk/
