Same needles. Different training.

It concerns me how often patients don’t realise that acupuncture practitioners can have very different levels of training.

You deserve to know who is treating you—and what qualifications sit behind their practice.

In the UK, acupuncturists are not statutorily regulated. There are voluntary professional registers, including the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), whose register is independently accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

The BAcC states that its members complete a minimum three-year degree-level programme.

Before booking, ask:
• What acupuncture qualification do you hold?
• What did your training involve?
• Which professional register can I check?

For traditional acupuncture, I recommend checking the BAcC register at acupuncture.org.uk. Look up the practitioner’s name—don’t rely on a logo alone.

Save this before your next appointment and share it with someone considering acupuncture.

Did you know that training could differ so much?

Apparently this is me… ☀️😂

My daughter leandii went away to Granada with school and came home with this for me.

She chose Sunshine Care Bear because, in her words, “it reminded me of you because you’re always smiling and happy.” 🥹

Meanwhile, the face I’m pulling in this photo would suggest otherwise. 😂

But genuinely, it melted my heart. Of all the things your children could associate with you, being their happy, smiley person is pretty special. ❤️

I’ll treasure this little guy. ☀️🐻

This Sunday, you’ll find me right here at our family table… all set for a day of PhD work 📚☕️

The family are out for the day, so I’ve got the house to myself, my notebooks ready and a chance to properly dive into my research.

Today’s focus: the occupational stress our frontline staff experience, and exploring whether acupuncture could be an intervention to support their wellbeing.

Having worked with people in clinic and supported students in their clinical training, I’m curious about how research can help us better support those who spend their working lives caring for others.

A quiet house, plenty of reading and hopefully a few ideas coming together. This is my Sunday 💛

Hello, I’m Michelle—the face behind I Heart Acupuncture 👋

Alongside my work as an acupuncturist, I’m a clinical teacher and PhD researcher. Treating patients, supporting students and asking questions through research are all parts of the work I love.

I offer private acupuncture appointments in Leamington Spa, with time to listen, discuss what brings you in and tailor your care to you.

If you’ve been curious about acupuncture, or would like to return after some time away, you’re very welcome to get in touch.

💗 Message me to ask a question or enquire about an appointment.

And if you know someone who might be interested, please share this post with them.

Year 3, a new chapter!

Today I officially enrolled at the University of West London after deciding to transfer from Warwick. It was a decision I made with my research in mind, and I’m excited about where this next stage will take me.

I’m continuing into my third year, but today I got to be a fresher all over again — finding my way around, collecting my student card and taking it all in! 😄

I’ve already had such a good first impression of the setup at UWL. Feeling excited to get started! 💜

Around three-quarters of the patients I see in my clinic are women.

And when you think about what a woman’s body navigates throughout her lifetime, perhaps that isn’t surprising.

Puberty.
Periods.
Hormonal changes.
Pregnancy and postnatal recovery.
Perimenopause.
Menopause.

Our bodies are constantly adapting, and women’s health can be incredibly complex.

Yet despite women generally living longer than men, we spend more of our lives in poor health.

Endometriosis alone can take around 9 years to diagnose.

And far too many women still tell me they’ve felt dismissed along the way.

“It’s probably stress.”
“It’s your hormones.”
“That’s just part of being a woman.”
“Your tests are normal.”

Meanwhile, they know something doesn’t feel right.

In all my years of treating patients, one of the biggest compliments I receive isn’t about acupuncture.

It’s simply:

“Thank you for listening to me.”

That sentence has stayed with me.

Because being heard shouldn’t feel like exceptional healthcare. It should be the starting point.

Women deserve the time to tell their whole story.
They deserve questions to be asked.
They deserve their symptoms to be taken seriously.
And they deserve to feel that somebody is genuinely listening.

It’s one of the reasons women’s health has become such an important part of the work I do and why I believe so strongly that we can do better. ❤️

A reminder if you are thinking about acupuncture . Not all acupuncturists are fully qualified or part of a regulated body. Make sure to look at British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) find a practitioner page, this is the only membership in the UK that is recognised by the professional standards authority. Therefore, we have to adhere to the highest professional and safety standards to ensure you get the very best care.

Sunday continuous professional development - a good friend has had a stroke so I’m travelling later this week to see him and support with acupuncture. Scalp acupuncture has some great research so I’ve spent the day doing extra training and knowledge building!!

Shoulder pain… so why on earth am I putting a needle in your hand or foot? 🤔

It’s one of the questions I get asked a lot in clinic — and no, I haven’t forgotten where your shoulder is! 😂

Acupuncture isn’t always about putting needles directly into the area that hurts.

Think of it a bit like your Wi-Fi. If your laptop isn’t connecting properly, the laptop might not actually be the problem — sometimes you need to go and reset the router.

Your body can be similar. Where you feel the pain isn’t always the only place we need to consider when treating it.

That’s why I might use points in your hand, foot, leg or somewhere completely different from where you expected.

It’s not random. There’s a reason behind every point I choose. ❤️

That’s acupuncture.
