for trusted online information.

Going online can be a good place to start if you’re looking for mental health support. You can access information quickly and easily - just start up your computer or pull your phone out of your pocket, and start getting the answers you’re looking for.

But not everything you find online is reliable. Social media platforms like TikTok and some news platforms and blogs can contain information that is misleading, biased or incorrect. It’s important that you turn to sources you can trust.

Trusted online information for mental health support in Leeds includes:

mindwell-leeds.org.uk - provides trusted mental health information, practical support, and details of local services for adults in Leeds. This year marks 10 years since Mindwell first launched, making it a well-established source of mental health information and signposting across the city.

mindmate.org.uk - provides mental health and wellbeing information and support for young people in Leeds, as well as information for parents and carers.

mind.org.uk - provides information and support for when you're living with a mental health problem, or supporting someone who is. From Mind, the national mental health charity.

When things are tough, finding support can feel overwhelming. It can feel especially difficult if you’re experiencing a mental health crisis.

We’re breaking down what a mental health crisis is, so you know what it can look like, and where to turn in Leeds for yourself or someone else.

A mental health crisis can mean different things to different people, but it can look like:

- Feeling overwhelmed by distress and finding it difficult to cope
- Sudden or unusual difficulty in communicating with others
- Finding it impossible to function as you normally would
- Experiencing flashbacks or nightmares about past experiences that are overwhelming
- Experiencing voices, thoughts or perceptions that feel frightening or difficult to manage
- Having thoughts of self-harm or su***de, or feeling unable to keep yourself safe

A mental health crisis can happen because of stressful events and experiences such as bereavement, addiction, relationship breakdown, or anything that feels like a lot to deal with.

This can happen if you have an existing mental health condition. It can also happen if you have never experienced something like this before. It can be very frightening for the person experiencing the crisis, and worrying for those around them.

If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, or someone you know is, these slides tell you where you can turn.

As it says on the NHS website, “A mental health emergency should be taken as seriously as a physical one. You will not be wasting anyone's time.”

for local health and wellbeing services.

You don’t have to wait until things feel completely overwhelming to reach out. Something might have been on your mind for a while, or you may not be feeling like yourself. Local health and wellbeing services can help you start to improve things.

Here are some places to start:

You can speak to your doctor. General Practitioners are trained in supporting people with their mental wellbeing and regularly see people experiencing mental health problems. Some practices in Leeds have specialist mental health practitioners. Book a doctor’s appointment as you usually would, and tell them what you’d like to discuss.

If you’re unsure about going to your doctor for support, Mind has advice on ‘How to get help from your GP for mental health’ – search that phrase online to learn more.

Leeds Mental Wellbeing Service provides support and therapies for common issues such as anxiety, stress and depression. You have to be aged 17+ and registered with a Leeds GP. Search Leeds Mental Wellbeing Service to learn more and find out about referral routes.

Linking Leeds is a ‘social prescribing’ service, which helps by addressing social, emotional, and practical needs. So if you’re struggling because of things like loneliness, debt or a long-term health condition, they can link you up with non-medical support, from walking groups and creative activities to housing, debt and mental health advice. Search Linking Leeds to learn more.

Remember: you’re never wasting anyone’s time by taking a first step towards support today.
