What if striking could take you beyond the standing position?

Exploring the Low/Ground dimension of HITPADS™ through dynamic seated transitions, coordination, and striking pathways with a light dumbbell.

HITPADS™ is movement training through striking, footwork, transitions, and flow.

Martial conditioning can be more than simply working harder.

It can also be about becoming capable from different positions.

Here I’m using the punching bag while exploring movement from the Low/Ground dimension.

The striking gives me something to work towards, but much of the challenge happens between those strikes.

I have to support my bodyweight, roll, rotate, change orientation, coordinate my upper and lower body and continue moving.

For a martial artist, that creates a different conditioning problem.

Instead of only asking:

“How long can I keep going?”

We can also ask:

“Can I continue moving well when the position changes?”

And this idea isn’t exclusive to martial artists.

For anyone who wants to explore training differently, changing positions and transitions can introduce physical challenges that conventional stationary exercises may not provide in the same way.

The goal isn’t complicated movement.

It’s more movement possibilities.

MORE POSITIONS • MORE TRANSITIONS • MORE POSSIBILITIES

HITPADS™ — Striking Flow for Movement

What happens when striking moves beyond standing?

Here I’m using a punching bag to explore striking from a Low/Ground position.

I strike, use my hands to support my body, shift around the ground, change my orientation and arrive on the opposite side ready to strike again.

But I’m not trying to create a fancy bag combination.

I’m interested in the movement problem underneath it.

The body has to support, shift, coordinate, reorient and strike.

Within HITPADS™, I’m exploring striking across different dimensions:

UPRIGHT → MIDDLE → LOW/GROUND

Each one changes the physical problem and gives us different movement possibilities.

The bigger idea:

Movement and striking don’t have to be separate.

🥊 THE COMBINATION IS ONLY PART OF THE PRACTICE.

Here we’re working with something very simple:

Jab → Cross → Knee

But inside HITPADS™, learning the strikes is only the starting point.

There is another layer happening between two people:

POSITION — where am I in relation to my partner?

DISTANCE — am I in the right place for the task?

TIMING — when do I move and strike?

AWARENESS — can I stay connected to what my partner is doing rather than thinking only about my own technique?

This is why the pads are so interesting.

The striker isn’t moving alone anymore.

The holder also has to position, move, time the pads and communicate with the striker.

Now we have an interactive movement problem.

And this is only the Upright dimension.

As the practice develops, we can start changing the movement, direction, level, information and eventually the amount of reaction required.

That’s when a simple combination can become something much richer.

HITPADS™ — Striking Flow for Movement

Martial arts can give us more than fighting techniques they can give us different ways to move.

Here I’m exploring locomotion from a lower, wider position: travelling backwards, moving laterally and changing direction while maintaining the stance.

For martial artists, this can provide a useful conditioning challenge.

But I’m also interested in something broader:

movement vocabulary.

The more positions, directions and transitions we can practise with control, the more movement possibilities we have available.

Within HITPADS™, this can later progress from:

MOVE → STRIKE → EVADE → REACT

The movement becomes part of the striking practice rather than something separate from it.

Don’t just condition your body. Expand your movement vocabulary.

🥊 WHAT HAPPENS BEFORE WE EVEN HIT THE PADS?

HITPADS™ isn’t only about learning punches and kicks.

Before we bring in the pads, we can first develop something fundamental:

ways to move.

In this introduction, I’m exploring three different dimensions:

UPRIGHT — stepping, positioning and moving through space.

MIDDLE — lowering the body, supporting ourselves and transitioning.

GROUND — moving, rolling and learning different ways to organise the body close to the floor.

These movements gradually become part of a movement vocabulary.

Then we can start adding another layer:

🥊 Striking.
👀 Reaction.
↔️ Evasion.
⚡ Changes of direction.
🌀 Flow.

And that’s when the practice starts becoming HITPADS.

You don’t need to be a fighter.

You don’t need previous kickboxing experience.

You just need to be willing to move, learn and try something different.

Sometimes the simplest tool changes the whole practice. 🎾

A tennis ball doesn’t look like much.

But once I introduce it into movement, I have something external to organise around.

I shift my weight.

Move the ball.

Catch.

Change level.

Move from upright into middle and low positions.

Rise.

Reconnect.

Continue.

Now the practice isn’t only about performing a movement.

I have to watch, coordinate, time the catch, manage the ball and keep my body moving.

And that’s what interests me.

Instead of collecting more exercises, I can take something incredibly simple and keep changing the movement problem.

Different direction.

Different level.

Different speed.

Different catch.

Different solution.

Eventually, the individual movements begin connecting into a flow.

For me, this is where training starts feeling less like repeating exercises and more like learning a movement language.

The tennis ball is only the instrument.

The body is the practice.

What happens when shadowboxing moves beyond one position?

Strike.

Pivot.

Change direction.

Lower.

Transition.

Rise.

Strike again.

This HITPADS™ Solo Flow isn’t about creating a complicated combination. It’s an exploration of how striking can connect with movement across different directions and levels.

Solo practice represents only one part of HITPADS. Partner padwork later introduces interaction, perception, decision and reaction.
