🌿 EVER WONDERED WHY SOME WIND SMELLS WORSE THAN OTHERS? 💨

We all pass wind, but why does it sometimes barely smell, while other times it’s rather unpleasant?

Here’s something fascinating…

Most intestinal gas is actually odourless!

The smell usually comes from tiny amounts of sulphur-containing gases produced as gut bacteria break down food.

Occasional smelly wind is completely normal, but persistently offensive wind can sometimes be associated with:

🌿 Certain foods and dietary changes
🌿 Constipation and slower bowel transit
🌿 Food intolerances
🌿 Changes in gut bacterial fermentation

However, smell alone cannot tell us whether someone has an unhealthy gut microbiome.

💙 At ARCH, we believe no one should feel embarrassed about discussing their bowel health.

An ARCH Registered Colon Hydrotherapist can take time to discuss your bowel habits, diet and lifestyle, helping you explore possible contributing factors and recognise when medical advice may be needed.

💙 Your digestive system is wonderfully complex, and even something as ordinary as passing wind can tell us a little about how digestion works.

🌿 DID YOU KNOW YOUR GUT HANDLES AROUND 9 LITRES OF FLUID EVERY DAY?

That might sound like an enormous amount, but don’t worry — it doesn’t mean you need to drink nine litres of water!

Throughout the day, your digestive system processes approximately 8–9 litres of fluid, including what you drink and the digestive juices your body naturally produces.

These include saliva, stomach acid, bile and secretions from your pancreas and intestines.

But here’s the fascinating part…

💧 Your small intestine reabsorbs most of this fluid, along with important nutrients and electrolytes.

💧 Your large intestine recovers much of the remaining water and electrolytes, helping to form stool with the right consistency for passing.

Only a relatively small amount of water is normally lost through your stool.

💙 Your digestive system isn’t simply moving food and waste along — it’s constantly absorbing, recycling and carefully regulating fluid to help maintain your body’s balance.

Another remarkable reminder of just how hard your digestive system works behind the scenes!

ARCH — Helping you understand the fascinating science behind your digestive and bowel health.

🌿 DID YOU KNOW THERE ARE VIRUSES LIVING IN YOUR GUT?

We often hear about the trillions of bacteria living in our digestive system. But did you know your gut is also home to fungi and viruses?

And here’s something fascinating…

Many gut viruses are called bacteriophages. These tiny viruses infect bacteria rather than human cells and can influence which bacterial populations thrive within your gut.

Together, our gut microbes help:

🌿 Break down certain fibres and food components
🌿 Produce beneficial compounds
🌿 Support normal immune function
🌿 Help protect against unwanted microbes

Scientists are still discovering just how these microorganisms interact and influence our health.

💙 Many people also choose colonic hydrotherapy as part of their wider approach to digestive wellbeing, alongside good nutrition, hydration and healthy bowel habits. ARCH Registered Colon Hydrotherapists can offer individual guidance on bowel habits and digestive wellbeing.

💙 Your microbiome is a remarkable living community — another reminder of just how extraordinary your digestive system really is!

💙 WE ALL POO. SO WHO TAUGHT US TO BE ASHAMED OF TALKING ABOUT IT?

Have you ever wondered why something every single one of us does is still considered such an embarrassing subject?

For generations, many of us were brought up believing that toilet habits were private, something we simply didn’t discuss.

Perhaps it was our upbringing, social expectations or the fear of being judged.

But here’s the thing…

When embarrassment stops us talking about our bowel health, it can also stop us asking for help when something isn’t right.

Constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, bowel urgency and changes in our usual habits shouldn’t be subjects we’re afraid to discuss.

💙 At ARCH, we believe no one should ever feel embarrassed about their bowel health.

Our registered therapists provide a welcoming, respectful and non-judgemental environment where questions can be asked openly and concerns discussed in confidence.

🌿 Maybe it’s time we stopped treating bowel health as an embarrassing subject and started recognising it as an important part of our overall wellbeing.

Were you brought up believing that talking about poo was something you just didn’t do?

We’d love to hear your thoughts. 💙

🌿 The human touch matters.

More and more people are turning to AI for information, including about holistic practices such as colonic hydrotherapy.

AI can summarise research, but it cannot experience human connection or replace the care of a thoughtful practitioner or source clients honest feedback about their own experiences from having the treatment.

Being listened to, feeling understood and having time to talk through your concerns are meaningful parts of the care people receive.

Here, our ARCH Chair beautifully reflects on the human side of holistic practice — and why people’s individual experiences deserve to be heard alongside the research, to allow the public to make informed choices 💙

🌿 WORLD FOOD DAY — DOES GUT HEALTH START ON YOUR PLATE?

Yesterday was World Food Day, a reminder that the foods we choose can have a significant influence on our digestive health.

💚 A healthy gut microbiome plays an important role in bowel health, and what we eat helps shape that microbiome.

A varied diet rich in fibre, fruits, vegetables and wholegrains can help nourish the beneficial bacteria living within our large bowel.

But here’s something important…

Gut health is never one size fits all.

What works well for one person may cause bloating, discomfort or changes in bowel habits for another.

💙 That’s why an ARCH Registered Colon Hydrotherapist looks at the whole picture.

We take time to discuss your diet, medical history, bowel habits and lifestyle to understand the factors that may be influencing your digestive wellbeing.

Because good professional care isn’t simply about providing a treatment — it’s about understanding the individual.

🌿 Small, consistent food choices can make a meaningful difference.

🌿 YOUR BOWEL DOESN’T WORK IN ISOLATION!

When you’re experiencing constipation, bloating or changes in your bowel habits, it’s easy to assume the problem lies solely within your large bowel.

But many different factors can influence how your bowel functions.

🌿 Diet — what and how you eat
💧 Hydration — helping maintain softer stools
🧠 Stress — influencing the gut–brain connection
💊 Medication — some medicines can slow bowel motility
🚶 Lifestyle — movement, routines and toilet habits

Underlying health conditions and pelvic floor dysfunction can also play an important role.

💙 That’s why an ARCH Registered Colon Hydrotherapist looks at the whole picture.

We take time to listen, understand your medical history and explore the factors that may be affecting your bowel function.

Because good professional care isn’t simply about providing a treatment — it’s about understanding the individual and helping them make informed choices about their digestive wellbeing.

💙 Every bowel is different. Every person is different. And everyone deserves to be listened to.

🌿 YOUR APPENDIX ISN’T USELESS — HERE’S WHY!

For many years, the appendix was thought to have very little purpose. But research suggests this small organ may play a more important role in our digestive health than we once realised.

Your appendix contains immune tissue and may act as a protected “safe house” for some of the beneficial bacteria living in your gut.

Studies have also found differences in the gut microbiome of some people following appendix removal, although research is still developing and most people live perfectly well without one.

💙 But what if your bowel habits change afterwards?

Some people experience bloating, constipation or digestive discomfort, although these symptoms aren’t necessarily always caused by appendix removal.

Many people choose to seek the support of an ARCH Registered Colon Hydrotherapist to discuss their digestive concerns, bowel habits and whether colonic hydrotherapy may be suitable as part of their wider wellbeing journey.

While colonic hydrotherapy cannot replace the appendix or restore the microbiome, an ARCH therapist can offer guidance and support in understanding bowel habits.

💙 Our digestive system, immune system and gut microbiome are more closely connected than we once realised.

💙 CURIOUS ABOUT COLONIC HYDROTHERAPY, BUT FEELING UNSURE?

Trying something unfamiliar can feel daunting—especially when it involves something as personal as your bowel health.

You don’t need to feel embarrassed or have all the answers. An ARCH therapist can explain what happens, discuss whether treatment is suitable for you and answer your questions with care and without judgement.

There’s no pressure to book. Sometimes, a friendly conversation is the first step towards feeling more comfortable.

🌿 COULD YOUR PELVIC FLOOR BE AFFECTING YOUR BOWEL HEALTH?

When we think about constipation, bloating or difficulty opening our bowels, we often focus on diet, hydration and digestion.

But did you know that your pelvic floor muscles also play an essential role in how your bowel functions?

Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles that support your pelvic organs, including your bowel, and help control when and how you empty your re**um.

When these muscles become too tight, weakened or poorly coordinated, they can sometimes contribute to:

🌿 Constipation and straining
🌿 Difficulty passing stool
🌿 A feeling of incomplete emptying
🌿 Bloating and abdominal discomfort
🌿 Bowel urgency or leakage

And here’s something many people don’t realise — a tight pelvic floor isn’t necessarily a strong pelvic floor. Your muscles need to be able to relax as well as contract for healthy bowel function.

💙 Over the coming weeks, ARCH will be exploring pelvic floor health, including why dysfunction can develop, how it may affect bowel habits and why understanding these muscles is so important.

Because sometimes bowel difficulties aren’t simply about what’s happening inside your large bowel — the muscles supporting it matter too.

ARCH — Helping you understand the fascinating connections behind your bowel and digestive health.
