A significant step has been taken today in the elimination of hepatitis B!

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has become the second country after Japan to approve bepirovirsen, a first-in-class treatment offering a functional cure for some adults living with chronic hepatitis B.

This is an important milestone for people living with hepatitis B, and the wider hepatitis community, but we now need to make sure that this innovation reaches the people who need it, across different countries and communities.

This will require us to address barriers to testing, diagnosis and treatment; including stigma and discrimination, so that people can access care without fear or delay.

We believe everyone living with hepatitis B should have access to timely diagnosis, effective care and the benefits of scientific progress. As new treatment options emerge, innovation must go hand in hand with equitable access in order to accelerate progress towards hepatitis elimination. Read more about the approval here:

FDA today approved Hibsago (bepirovirsen) injection, in combination with existing antiviral therapy, to treat chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in certain adults without cirrhosis.

How can we turn advocacy into action to accelerate hepatitis elimination?

The World Hepatitis Alliance’s fifth Community Impact Accelerator Programme brought together 17 advocates from 13 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania to strengthen the skills and connections needed to drive change.

Through an in-person workshop at the 2026 World Hepatitis Summit in Bangkok and interactive virtual sessions, Group Five developed their knowledge and confidence in strategic advocacy, stakeholder engagement and turning ideas into practical action plans.

The impact speaks for itself: 85% of participants said they would definitely recommend the programme. Group Five leaves better equipped and connected to advance community-led advocacy and help achieve global hepatitis elimination by 2030. How can we make hepatitis B care more accessible and community-centred? Tackling stigma and discrimination is an essential part of the answer.

The World Hepatitis Alliance recently presented findings from its 2024 pilot stigma survey at the hepatitis B (HBV) Care Meeting, during a presentation titled “The Role of Stigma and Discrimination Related to Hepatitis B: Results from a Pilot Survey.” The survey, conducted in partnership with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), highlights how stigma can affect people’s relationships, wellbeing and access to healthcare.

Understanding and addressing these barriers is vital to building trusted, inclusive, community-centred services and ensuring that everyone affected by hepatitis B can access the care and support they need. Liver cancer is the third most common cause of cancer deaths worldwide, with most cases linked to hepatitis. Although effective tools exist to prevent and treat viral hepatitis, these interventions are still not reaching everyone who needs them.

Awareness remains a significant challenge. Research conducted by the World Hepatitis Alliance (WHA) found that nearly half of people globally are unaware of the link between hepatitis and liver cancer, highlighting the need for greater public awareness and stronger action to prevent avoidable deaths.

During Liver Cancer Awareness Month, WHA is calling for greater investment and action to scale up hepatitis elimination efforts and reduce the burden of liver cancer. Through its white paper, Beating Cancer Through Hepatitis Elimination – Working Together to Reduce NCDs, WHA sets out key calls to action for policymakers that could make a transformative difference for people at risk.

“Success looks like no one dying from a preventable disease. No one should be dying from hepatitis B. There are vaccines, there’s effective treatment, and if we can get those to the people that need them in a timely fashion and bring in greater choice, more innovations, then no one should be dying from a preventable disease.” – Jessica Hicks, Senior Director, World Hepatitis Alliance

Jessica recently sat down with Dr. Kat Arney, and Joyeta Das from GSK on the "Behind the Science" podcast for a discussion on hepatitis B. Tune in to hear their thoughts on the current state of play, and what needs to be done to build awareness and get to those most affected:

Nearly 300 million people are living with viral hepatitis worldwide, yet only around one third have been diagnosed. Despite having the tools to diagnose and treat hepatitis, access to testing remains out of reach for many. Urgent action is needed to close this gap and put elimination within reach by 2030.

Join the World Hepatitis Alliance tomorrow, Tuesday 13 October, at 12pm GMT for a 30-minute webinar introducing World Hepatitis Testing Week (WHTW) 2026, which starts on 16 November. Chaired by WHA President Dee Lee, with speakers Jessica Hicks, Senior Director, and Alexandra Smith, Advocacy and Engagement Manager, the webinar will explore the campaign and its new resources.
