I was at Waterbear College’'s first Music Education Conference this week with a group of experienced performing arts educators — teachers working privately, in schools, and one head of department. People who have been in the creative sector for years.
Almost every one of them was carrying an imposter verdict they'd never properly examined.
What became clear — and what I haven't been able to stop thinking about since — is that these same teachers were saying exactly the right things to their students. They just weren't applying any of it to themselves.
This week's 'I was thinking...' is about what happens when we don't. And what it quietly costs the students in front of us.

We talk a lot about the challenges of teaching different generations. But how much of what we're observing is genuinely generational, and how much are we measuring everyone against a standard we set a long time ago, based on people who looked a lot like us?

In this week's 'I was thinking...' I explore what the research is actually saying about generational differences, what's genuinely shifting in how young people develop, and why the most useful question might not be "what's wrong with this generation?" but something a bit more uncomfortable than that.

If you work across generations, as a teacher, a leader, or anyone navigating a multi-generational space, I'd love to know what you've noticed. Substack link: https://open.substack.com/pub/linehilton/p/about-generations?r=5t92t2&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

Do you hate the sound of your own voice? Most people do. And most people have no idea what it’s quietly costing them.

In this week’s ‘I was thinking...’ LinkedIn newsletter I’m exploring why we’re so unkind to our own voice, what that holds us back from, and what becomes possible when we stop fighting it and start listening instead.

Day 30 of . Have been exploring who I am these days. Figuring out how to settle into this new chapter, this latest iteration of me. This age, this job role, this era, this ego layer. Had an interesting realisation this week when doing some work on myself with my practice buddy. I haven’t stopped to figure out who I am now, without those myriads of limiting beliefs and thought patterns I’ve eliminated over the past decade. And as I embrace the last quarter of my life span. It does deserve some thought. I need to honour what life I have left and embrace this latest version of myself. It’s a WIP for sure, but I am excited to figure it out. Will I be just an older version of myself, become a caricature of ‘Line’, or step into something completely different? I quite fancy the astronaut possibility!

Day 29 of : Once when I was in Thailand I did this lovely activity of writing about something I wanted to let go of, attaching it to a lantern and letting it go. Watching the lantern float away I could feel the issue becoming more distant. It was like the intention was enough to create a disconnect. We often choose to hold on to our stories even when they no longer serve us. Letting go is a choice.

Day 28 of : I started this morning with an meditation called ‘Morning prayer to my guardian angel’ by . It was lovely, and a timely reminder that I am always being looked after by higher beings. I’ve always had an affinity with Archangel Michael. Recently I’ve been disconnected from my spiritual side. These lovely cards, by doreenvirtue came to mind after the meditation was over. I meant to draw only 3 but the 4th was stuck to the 3rd. Each clarified a question around how to move forward from this point. 1. I do need to play more, work less 2. I am in need of replenishment and need to give myself that space - so literally looking for a retreat to go on. 3. I have the freedom of choice, the ‘bind’ I feel I’m in atm is of my own doing 4. The Archangel Michael card! A reminder I am always being looked out for by my angel, I am safe and secure.

Day 28 of : I’ve always loved looking at clouds. I remember the first time I saw a Constable. I thought it was lovely but the clouds seemed unrealistic and surreal. That’s because I hadn’t really noticed the clouds in the British countryside! On one of my earliest walks in Surrey I encountered a sky of clouds that took my breath away (last image). Such depth and variety. Constable was painting what he saw, I just hadn’t had that experience yet.

Day 27 of : started the day really centred and energised thanks to and Ended the day feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Think I need to do more than one a day or take a holiday!

Day 27 of : as an certified practitioner I often use to help my clients reduce anxiety, reframe negative thoughts and find clarity. Ironically I sometimes forget to use it myself! Had an amazing mentoring day with trainer yesterday, learned so much. Feeling inspired to do more with this tool to help others calm their minds and find clarity. Putting on my thinking cap 🧢. Enlightening on with this morning.
