“We already have that data.”

It’s something we hear surprisingly often.

And technically, it can be true.

The numbers might exist somewhere in a spreadsheet, buried inside a PMS, or split across several reports.

But having the data and being able to see what is actually happening in your clinic are very different things.

Good data infrastructure isn’t about whether the number exists somewhere.

It’s about whether leadership can quickly understand what is happening, spot the problem, and make a better decision because of it.

For clinic operators, visibility is the difference between having data and actually running the business with it.

The best dentistry isn't always about the biggest procedure.

In our conversation with Steven Lynch, we discussed what conservative dentistry actually looks like in practice.

A big part of it is surprisingly simple: maintenance, continuity and helping patients stay on top of their oral health before bigger interventions become necessary.

And when more complex treatment is needed, having the right specialists available and making it easy for patients to access them becomes just as important.

It is a useful reminder that great healthcare isn't only about what happens when something goes wrong.

It's about building a patient journey that helps people stay on track in the first place.

Someone asked your clinic about a consultation. Then the conversation stopped.

Today's appointments and calls take over, and that earlier enquiry stays in the backlog.

Coherent Engage's Lead Revival programme checks in with eligible older enquiries under agreed contact rules. When someone replies, a coordinator can continue the conversation with context.

A clear owner for the next step, and a considerate way to find out whether the person still wants help.

Before COVID, about half of Dr Chris Anselmi's patients were commuters. Today it's closer to a quarter.

His New York practice closed for almost eight weeks in 2020. He took out disaster relief loans, used his savings, and reopened three days a week before building back up to five.

To fill the diary, he joined a couple of insurance plans. Now he says low reimbursement is pushing the practice towards a volume model he doesn't want, and he's planning a gradual way back to fee-for-service.

Sally talked to him about all of it, plus Google Ads, hiring and learning to lead the money conversation, on the new episode of The Business of a Clinic.

Last week, we had Rhys Carter, Group Managing Director of Carter & George, on The Business of a Clinic with Jared Aron.

Rhys shared the story of building Carter & George from its first clinic into a 20-site MSK group, and what he has learned about growth, people, patient experience and building a healthcare business that can scale without losing quality.

A really good conversation with plenty for clinic owners and operators to take away.

Why do we make it so hard for patients to talk to us?

A clinic sends you an SMS with an update, then tells you to call another number if you have a question.

You receive test results through multiple access gates. Some results arrive now, others weeks later. Then another message tells you they are available somewhere else.

None of these steps seem disastrous on their own.

But together, they create friction at exactly the moment a patient wants clarity.

Patient access is not just about whether someone can eventually get an answer.

It is about how easy we make it for them to continue the conversation.
If a patient receives a message, they should be able to reply.
If they need the next step, it should be obvious.

If information becomes available, they should not have to fight through the system to find it.

Healthcare already asks a lot from patients.
Communication should not be another obstacle.

The receptionist isn’t disappearing. The admin is.

One of my favourite points from my conversation with Tim Wright was his take on what the front desk could become as more clinic admin is automated.

A great receptionist does something technology still cannot replicate very well.

They remember you. They welcome you. They create atmosphere. They make the clinic feel like somewhere you are being looked after, rather than somewhere you are simply being processed.

But today, we bury those people in admin.

Booking people in. Copying information from one system to another. Moving data around. Repetitive tasks that leave less time for the part humans are actually best at.

Tim’s point was simple: let technology take more of that work away, and let the receptionist become the patient-facing culture builder.

More like the person who welcomes you into a great restaurant. Less like someone managing a queue of administrative tasks.

That is a much more interesting vision of healthcare automation.

Using technology to make healthcare more human.

We’ve done a bad job explaining Coherent Engage. So here’s what it actually does, in plain English:

Most healthcare providers still communicate with patients as if every patient is on the same journey.

They aren’t.

🤔 One patient has just enquired and needs help booking.
🤔 Another has had a consultation but still has questions.
🤔 Another cancelled two weeks ago and never rebooked.
🤔 Another hasn’t been seen for six months.
🤔 Another simply needs a check-in at the right moment.

But most clinic communication still looks the same:

🗃️ Appointment reminders.
🗃️ Generic recall emails.
🗃️ Mass marketing.
🗃️ Automated notifications.

Useful, yes.

❌ But that isn’t really patient engagement.

✅ Coherent Engage is built to give healthcare providers one-to-one patient engagement at scale.

It helps clinics understand where each patient is in their journey, identify who needs attention, and then manage the outreach, responses and booking activity that follows.

Not one campaign for 10,000 patients.

👉 10,000 individual journeys, supported differently depending on what is actually happening.

🪽 AI helps handle the volume: monitoring, prioritising, timing and orchestrating engagement.

👩🏻‍💼 Expert patient coordinators supervise the interactions and step in when judgement, nuance or a human conversation is needed.

So Coherent Engage can sit across the patient journey:
→ New enquiries
→ Consultation follow-up
→ Cancellations and DNAs
→ Recall and reactivation
→ Ongoing patient support

The idea is simple:

✔️ The right patient.
✔️ The right moment.
✔️ The right channels
✔️ The right message.

💪 And someone actually owning what happens next.

Charlie Boyer came to fertility with no medical background. He trained in computer science, worked on telecoms systems, spent years as a chief operating officer in financial services, then ran a cord blood bank.

Today he's co-founder and CEO of Generations CryoVault, which stores tissue for fertility patients in the US and around the world.

In the US most of those patients pay out of pocket. Charlie's response was a Pricing Promise: his company will never make more than a 15% margin, and clients can see the costs in their portal.

The first question he gets is what he's sacrificing. His answer is ISO 9001 certification, checked by independent auditors, and a published disaster recovery and business continuity plan.

Growth rarely goes exactly to plan.

When Vinay expanded into Central London, the new site was meant to open in September.

He had already recruited two new therapists, contracts were signed and start dates were agreed.

Then he walked into the building.

Builders everywhere. Drilling. The whole place still upside down.

The site eventually opened on 1 December.

But Vinay had already made a commitment to his new team, and he wanted to honour it.

So instead of waiting for the perfect conditions, he improvised and found a way to make it work.
