What happens when you speak about abuse and people doubt you?

Being questioned can deepen the self-doubt and isolation abuse may already have caused. In my new Liberation Lens blog, I write about the lasting impact of disbelief and victim-blaming—and the gradual work of learning to trust yourself again.

I’ve experienced people questioning me and making me feel inadequate. I believe that hurt will stay with me. But my conscience is clear, and other people’s doubts don’t erase what I know I’ve lived through.

No one should have to tell their story perfectly to deserve to be heard.

When you speak about abuse and someone doubts you, the impact can stay with you.

In my new Liberation Lens blog, “Learning to Trust Myself Again”, I write about being questioned, the harm that disbelief and victim-blaming can cause, and the slow process of learning to trust your own feelings and judgement again.

I’ve experienced people questioning me and making me feel inadequate. I believe that hurt will stay with me. But my conscience is clear, and other people’s doubts don’t erase what I know I’ve lived through.

No one should have to tell their story perfectly to deserve to be heard. Listening without judgement can make a difference.

I spent a long time wondering what I had done wrong.

I was told again and again that everything was my fault. I couldn’t work out what I had supposedly done, but I kept searching for an answer. Even after the confusion began to lift, I wanted to understand—because if I had done something wrong, I needed to know, so I could make sure it didn’t happen again.

That’s one reason I’m beginning October with two personal articles about domestic abuse: one about gaslighting and the struggle to trust your own reality; the other about coercive control and the questions it can leave behind.

I had hoped to publish on 1 October, but choosing where to begin—and finding the words—was harder than I expected. My own journey has made this difficult to write about, but it has also strengthened my determination to keep speaking up.

Raising awareness and campaigning against the pandemic of domestic abuse are at the heart of who I am and the journey I’m on. I’ve been quiet for a while, but I haven’t given up. I hope these articles help someone feel recognised, encourage others to listen, and keep this conversation going.
