One surprising cause of daytime wetting? Anxiety.

Daytime wetting often occurs due to anxiety over toilet avoidance or family issues - such as changes in family dynamics.

The good thing is, these can be addressed quite promptly - P*ePS supports children and families with bladder and bowel concerns.

FAQ: What is 'wee withholding'?

Wee withholding is when a child consciously or unconsciously holds in their urine (wee) and refuses to empty their bladder.

We find this is often because they are distracted, don't want to use public or school toilets or because they are having too much fun with friends! They must learn the importance of emptying their bladder though, as wee withholding can lead to bladder issues.

Constipation affects around 1 in 5 autistic children.

Research found constipation in 22% of autistic children, compared with 9% of non-autistic children.

Having scheduled sit times for pee/p**p can be helpful to decrease accidents. This can also help children to 'check in' with their bodies to try to listen to what it's saying.

Ask P*eps Bladder Control: What is the easiest way to test total 'transit time' for food to stool?

It's the corn test! ๐ŸŒฝ

Get your child to eat a serving of corn for one meal and then look for it in their p**p! Don't let them eat corn again for at least a week - document the time they ate the corn and then when you see the corn in their p**p. It might show up in multiple bowel movements which is important to document too!

Functional constipation is sneaky. Children are usually p**ping every day or missing 1-2 days a week, but are having incontinence or difficulty getting all of the ๐Ÿ’ฉ out. With the corn test, they might take more than 72 hours to pass the corn, or pass a little bit over multiple days. Both could indicate functional constipation!

Will you be doing the corn test? Let us know in the comments! ๐ŸŒฝ

4 tips to decrease and prevent constipation!

Parents always ask me what they can do to help their constipated child - here are 4 (I think, easy) ways to decrease constipation!

1. Eat more fibre - fibre isn't digested and gets passed through to the colon where good bacteria ferment it. Fibre feeds the gut microbiome and promotes better overall health as a result.
2. Drink more water โ€“ if you've been following for a while, you knew I was going to say this one!
3. Limit processed foods - our body wasnโ€™t made to digest the chemicals in processed foods. These can make our digestion less than optimal.
4. Take a gentle walk after meals where possible - this will speed digestion, stimulate muscles and reduce gas/bloating.

Have you tried any of these strategies to help your child's constipation?
