“What time are we leaving?”
If someone with dementia keeps asking the same question, it can be difficult to know how to respond - especially when you've already answered it several times.
Repeated questions can happen because the person has forgotten the answer, feels anxious, is looking for reassurance or is struggling to retain new information.
Try these approaches:
💙 Stay calm – Remember, they may not realise they've already asked.
💙 Reassure rather than correct – A simple, reassuring answer can be more helpful than repeatedly explaining.
💙 Use visual reminders – A clock, calendar or simple written note may help with familiar information.
💙 Look for the feeling behind the question – Are they worried about where they're going or who they're waiting for?
💙 Gently redirect – Try moving on to a familiar activity or conversation.
It can be tiring, but responding to the need behind the question can sometimes make things easier for both of you.
