Getting out of bed during pregnancy or after having a baby doesn't have to be quite such a struggle!
Here's a simple step-by-step guide to the log rolling technique, helping you move from lying down to sitting up with less strain on your back, hips and tummy.
Save this for later, or share it with someone who might find it helpful. 💛

It's 3 am. You're pregnant. You've finally got comfortable.....
...And then your bladder decides it's time for another trip to the loo. 😂

Getting out of bed shouldn't require a complicated gymnastics routine, but during pregnancy or after having a baby, sometimes it feels that way! There's a simple technique called **log rolling** that can make getting from lying down to sitting up a little more manageable.

And it's something you can learn while you're still pregnant. I've written a little more about why it helps, how it's recommended in NHS maternity guidance and why those small adjustments can make a difference.

A little practical coaching can make a real difference during pregnancy and after having a baby.
Here's a glimpse of how I coach women through the log rolling technique at Sunshine Holistic Therapy.

It's funny how something you've done thousands of times without thinking can suddenly become such a big deal.

Getting out of bed.
Standing up from the sofa.
Rolling over in the middle of the night.
Or putting your knickers on without performing some sort of balancing act!
They're such ordinary little things that we barely give them a second thought. Until, suddenly, they're not quite so straightforward.

During pregnancy, and sometimes after childbirth, movements that used to happen automatically can become awkward, uncomfortable or even painful.
And when you're already tired, the last thing you need is to feel like you're negotiating an obstacle course just to get dressed.

But here's something worth knowing.
Sometimes it's not about avoiding the movement altogether. It's about finding a slightly different way of doing it. A small adjustment to how you roll over, get up or move from one position to another can make an everyday task feel much more manageable.
And those little changes matter. Because when you're doing something several times a day, being a bit more comfortable while doing it can make quite a difference.

Getting out of bed shouldn't require a military operation.

But when you're pregnant, or recovering from giving birth, even something as simple as getting out of bed can suddenly feel like a major undertaking!

And there's actually a technique that can make it easier. It's called the **log rolling technique**, and it's something I regularly teach women in clinic.
Rather than trying to sit straight up from lying down, you roll onto your side first, bring your legs over the edge of the bed and use your arms to help push yourself upright.
It's a recognised technique recommended during pregnancy and following childbirth, whether you've had a vaginal birth or a C-section.

Why does it matter?
Because it helps reduce unnecessary strain on your abdominal muscles and back, supports your recovering tummy and is particularly useful when managing diastasis recti (abdominal separation).
And the best bit? You can start practising during pregnancy, so it becomes second nature before your baby arrives. That's exactly what I'm demonstrating with my client in this photo.
Now, I know describing a movement is one thing, but actually seeing how to do it is another!
So I'm currently putting together a step-by-step guide with photographs AND a full video demonstration, showing you exactly how to do the log roll.

Keep your eyes peeled next week! 👀💛

Sometimes the words women use to describe the changes they notice say it better than I ever could.

This week I've been talking about why a C-section scar can look completely healed on the outside, but still feel tight, restricted, pulling or simply… different.
That's why this lovely review from Mimosa felt particularly relevant.
“Moving way more freely.”

Such a simple little sentence, but an important one. Because scar recovery isn't only about what the scar looks like.
How the area feels, how comfortably the tissues move and what you're noticing in your own body matter too.
Thank you, Mimosa, for taking the time to leave such a lovely review, and for allowing your experience to help another woman recognise something in her own.

“My C-section scar looks fine… so why does it still feel so weird?”

Maybe it feels tight when you stand up straight.
Perhaps it pulls when you stretch or reach.
One side might feel different from the other.
It might feel stuck, sensitive or as though the skin and tummy around it just don’t move quite as freely as you’d expect.
And sometimes it isn’t even painful.
It just feels… strange.

That can be particularly confusing when the scar itself looks completely healed.
But the little line you can see on the surface isn’t necessarily the whole story.
A C-section involves healing through several layers of tissue, and those tissues continue changing and remodelling long after the skin has closed.

One simple way to picture restriction is to think about catching a thread in a piece of fabric. The snag might be in one place, but when it pulls, you can see tension through the material around it.
The snag is in one place. The tension isn’t.

That doesn’t mean every strange feeling around a C-section scar is caused by scar tissue, or that the scar is responsible for every ache elsewhere in your body.
It simply helps explain why something that looks beautifully healed on the outside can sometimes still feel tight, pulling, restricted or just a bit different underneath.
This week’s blog looks at what may be going on when a C-section scar looks healed but doesn’t quite feel that way.

Working together to support the women of Levenshulme 💛

One of the things I love about having Sunshine here in Levenshulme is getting to know the other people and organisations doing brilliant things for women and families in our community. So it was lovely to spend some time with the women from ParentClub recently.

We might offer different things, but there’s a lot of common ground between us, helping women find information, practical support and somewhere they feel comfortable asking questions when they need it. Because none of us can be everything to everybody.

Sometimes the most useful thing we can do is know who else is out there, understand what they offer and be able to say, “Actually, I know someone who might be able to help with that.” That’s how good local support should work.

Not everybody working away in their own little bubble, but knowing each other, sharing knowledge and helping women find the right support for them.
And I think Levenshulme is all the better for it.

Here’s to more local women supporting local women.
