Snoring, gurgling or stridor — do you know what these airway sounds mean? 🫁👩‍⚕️

Student nurses, recognising abnormal airway sounds is an important part of your ABCDE assessment and clinical skills.

Here’s a simple way to remember them:

🫁 SNORING — can indicate partial upper airway obstruction from relaxed soft tissues, especially in a patient with reduced consciousness.

🫁 GURGLING — can indicate fluid, vomit or secretions in the upper airway.

🫁 STRIDOR — a harsh, often high-pitched sound that can indicate significant upper airway narrowing and needs urgent assessment.

Remember, recognising the sound is only the beginning. Always assess your patient, escalate concerns and follow your local airway management and resuscitation protocols.

A quiet airway isn’t always a clear airway either!

Save this for your next ABCDE revision session, and share it with a student nurse or healthcare colleague who might find it useful! 💙
