🧡🦁 BELFAST CITY MARATHON 2027… FOR CHESTER! 🦁🧡

We are absolutely over the moon to announce that Chester’s Chance has officially entered the Belfast City Marathon 2027, with an incredible team ready to take on this very special challenge! 🧡

But this year, there’s someone extra special joining us…

Chester’s mummy, Emma. 🥹🧡

Anyone who knows Emma will know that running is her absolute worst nightmare. The thought of it genuinely terrifies her, but she’s putting her fears aside and taking on this challenge for a reason so much bigger than herself.

For Chester. For his legacy. For every family facing childhood cancer. 🦁

And when Emma crosses that finish line, she’ll have an incredible team beside her, a community cheering her on and Chester in her heart every step of the way. 🧡

A massive thank you to our amazing team from last year who are returning, and a heartfelt welcome to our wonderful new members. We couldn’t be prouder of you all!

Every step has a purpose. Every mile has meaning. And every heartbeat is for Chester. 🧡

Please show our incredible team, especially Emma, all the love and support they deserve!

🦁 For Chester. Always. 🧡

Day 30
My darling Chester, mummy’s boy.

As I lie here in bed tonight snuggling teddy, with tears of so many emotions, I have so much on my mind. My heart brought me back to the beginning, the sound of your cry as you were delivered, the most soft whispy locks of black hair, the cutest nose I have ever laid eyes on, and all of a sudden my world is brighter, clearer and full of love. I genuinely, wholeheartedly couldn’t have felt more love for you if I tried, it wouldn’t have been possible. You completed me, you completed our little family, you were our baby boy.

When I look at these two photos, side by side, my heart physically is in agony, it physically causes me pain in my soul, my chest feels tight like I’m struggling to breathe, and I feel broken. Because how could our world in two short beautiful, magical, euphoric years change overnight. This is the reality of what childhood cancer does to a mother, to a father, to siblings, families. This is our reality, our real life. I wake up everyday consciously choosing to go on and carry my boy with me inside. There’s times throughout the last 18 months where I looked at myself in the mirror and genuinely didn’t recognise myself, because the day Chester left this earth I truly believe a part of me went with him.

I carried this tiny baby in my body for nine months, I gave birth to this little bundle of joy, I nurtured this ball of energy into the most charismatic, charming, hilariously boisterous firecracker. The days I find particularly difficult are when the house is quiet, as the silence is truly deafening.

I choose to bare my soul, I choose to be vulnerable and open my heart, because I never want another parent, or family who are currently or previously experienced a similar journey to us, to feel they are alone, feel they have to suppress, feel frightened. For those who are blessed to have never and hopefully will never experience a magnitude of loss that will reshape every part of you, we want to educate, raise awareness and ask that you help us do that. I want my Reuben to grow older and know that his mummy done everything in her power, to tell his brothers story with passion, with fierceness, and love.

DAY 28 of childhood cancer awareness month🎗️

What is a lumbar puncture and why might a child with leukaemia need one?

🦁- A lumbar puncture (LP), sometimes called a spinal tap, involves placing a very thin needle into the lower part of the back, between the vertebrae. At diagnosis, doctors want to know whether leukaemia cells have entered the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord. The result helps the oncology team determine the child’s treatment plan.

🦁- Typically:

1. The child is taken into the procedure/theatre area.
2. They are positioned on their side with their knees drawn up.
3. The lower back is cleaned carefully to reduce infection risk.
4. The child is anaesthetised or sedated.
5. The doctor inserts the lumbar puncture needle into the lower back.
6. A small amount of CSF is collected for testing.
7. If chemotherapy is due, the medication is administered through the same needle.
8. The needle is removed and a small dressing/plaster is placed over the area.

🦁- The number of lumbar punctures a child receives varies depending on their type of leukaemia, treatment protocol and individual circumstances. A lumbar puncture can be a frightening word for a parent to hear, but for children with leukaemia it is an important part of monitoring and delivering treatment.

🦁 A THANK YOU FROM OUR FAMILY 🦁

The month of September has been a rollercoaster of emotions, a lot of conversations shared, we met numerous families who have shared the same unbearable pain as we continue to live with, however there is always hope. This month has shown us that happiness and sadness can co-exist and it’s important to continuing telling our story, Chester’s story.

Because of you, we can continue working towards our goal of supporting families affected by childhood cancer and using the funds we raise to make a meaningful difference.

Our mission is so much bigger than raising funds. It is about keeping the conversation around childhood cancer going, helping people understand the realities families face, reaching families who need support, and making sure no family feels completely alone in what can be the darkest time of their lives.

It feels especially poignant that our charity was officially registered on the first day of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month — a month dedicated to shining a light on childhood cancer, raising awareness and making sure the voices of children and families affected are heard.

And to all of the amazing local businesses who continue to stand beside us, support our campaigns and help us spread awareness beyond our own circle — we are so incredibly grateful. You are helping us take the conversation about childhood cancer further and reach people we could never reach alone.

So, as a little way of saying THANK YOU for all of your love and support, we are delighted to be holding a special Chester’s Chance raffle.

Thank you for believing in Chester.
Thank you for believing in our mission.
And thank you for helping us turn his little legacy into something that can make a difference for other children and families.

From our family to yours — thank you. 🤍

🦁🧡Day 20 of childhood cancer awareness month 🦁🧡

How can I help a family facing cancer?

🦁-Help with siblings: Take the other children to school, host playdates, or plan fun outings to give them a break and a sense of normalcy.

🦁- Be specific with offers: Avoid saying “let me know if you need anything.” Instead, say “I am dropping off dinner on Tuesday” or “I am picking up the kids from school today.”

🦁- Keep showing up: Treatment lasts a long time. Continue reaching out with small texts, coffee, or casual chats about normal topics long after the initial diagnosis.

🦁-Be there and listen — let them talk, cry, vent or simply sit in silence without feeling they need to explain themselves.

🦁- Support their charity or cause — share their fundraising posts, attend events and help raise awareness.

🦁- And perhaps most importantly…

You don’t have to fix it. You can’t take the cancer away.
But you can help make sure the family never feels like they’re facing it alone. 🧡

🧡🎂Happy Birthday to our amazing campaign manager, brains behind the scenes, voice of reason and most importantly our friend Eimear! 🎂🧡

Today we’re celebrating someone who has become such a huge part of the Chester’s Chance family 🧡

Eimear, you have given up so much of your own time to help us build Chester’s Chance from the ground up, all while running your own full-time business. The time, energy, dedication and love you have poured into helping us create something so special means more to us than we could ever put into words.

You have believed in our vision, supported us every step of the way and helped turn ideas into something real — a charity that we hope will make a genuine difference to children and families affected by childhood cancer. 🧡

We honestly couldn’t thank you enough for everything you do behind the scenes. Your commitment, kindness and willingness to always go the extra mile never goes unnoticed.

We hope today you take some time for yourself and realise just how appreciated and loved you are. 🥰

Happy Birthday, Eimear! 🥂🎂
From all of us at Chester’s Chance 🧡🦁

Here’s to you and everything you’ve helped us achieve so far — and to everything still to come! ✨
