It’s menopause awareness month….so I will be posting on this topic over the coming weeks.
Stress triggers a release of cortisol from the adrenal glands, the body’s primary stress hormone. During menopause, the ovaries slow down oestrogen production and the adrenal glands take on a bit more a role in hormone regulation. When we are chronically stressed, the adrenal glands are so busy focussing on cortisol production, they aren’t prioritising sex hormone balance…which can lead to worsened menopause symptoms.
Oestrogen and progesterone are already beginning to fluctuate more during perimenopause/menopause…chronic stress can cause further imbalances.
Studies show that prolonged stress can speed up the depletion of eggs, leading to an earlier transition into menopause.
It is so important to adopt strategies that help build our resilience to stress in this time of life. Here are a few suggestions:
🥦 Nutrition - adopt a whole food diet rich in nutrients that support adrenal health, build resilience to stress and help to balance hormones….protein, healthy fats, fibre, magnesium, B vitamins
💤 sleep - improving sleep hygiene is an absolute MUST. This is recovery time for your body. Nothing messes with your hormones more than sleep deprivation…and that isn’t just your sex hormones….its your stress, sleep, hunger, satiety, blood sugar regulation and thyroid hormones too!
🏃♀️ movement - not only do you release endorphins when you move, which improve mood, you are also supporting cardiovascular health, bone health and healthy weight management. Also, this is one of the BEST ways to close off a stress cycle 💪🏽
🧘♀️Mindfulness & meditation - yoga, breathwork, meditation, walk in nature….all simple effective ways to reduce cortisol, activate your parasympathetic nervous system (CALM) and reduce stress!

It’s all too easy to get swept up in the constant busyness and rat race of life…putting more and more pressure on ourselves to move from one task to another without time to have a glass of water or proper lunch…..let alone the space to really connect with what is going on with you….how your body feels and what’s signs and symptoms are manifesting.
So we hustle about our day in fight and flight mode….short term…yeah ok our bodies can deal….but long-term? Your body is gonna let you know in a big way! 🤷🏽♀️
To begin with we ignore the anxiety, the headaches, the skin concerns, the abdominal discomfort, the aches and pains….but you must listen to the messages your body is giving you.
We can eat all the organic kale, take the best supplements on the market, and exercise daily….but if you don’t connect to your body and vital force on a deep level you are missing a big trick….what am I talking about?
BREATH
Breath is the secret to influencing your autonomic nervous system. Your body will follow your breath’s lead. What happens when you are stressed? You shallow breathe, using short, sharp inhalations and exhalations…which further communicates to your body that you are not safe.
Diaphragmatic breathing activates your parasympathetic nervous system, bringing you out of alarm phase and puts you into rest and digest….and it is only then that your body and all its systems will work as they should!
I had a breath-work session with @thefaimethod today and it was eye-opening. I consider myself to be well connected to my mind, body and soul but even I didn’t expect to experience what came up for me.

🌟 I wish more women knew how closely their thyroid health is linked to their energy levels and overall vitality. 🌟
For many busy, stressed working women, feeling constantly drained and fatigued seems to have become the norm. But…I am here to tell you it’s not the norm to want to nap daily or feel continually shattered!! Did you know that your thyroid could possibly be the hidden culprit behind your low energy?
The thyroid, a small gland in your neck, plays a crucial role in regulating your metabolism, energy production, and even your mood. When it’s not functioning optimally, it can lead to symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, and mood swings—making it hard to keep up with the demands of daily life.
AND actually, chronic stress inhibits the release of thyroid stimulating hormone which in turn causes issue with healthy thyroid function…so we can get ourselves into a bit of a catch 22 🤯
You may get a blood test at the doctors and everything appears in range and hence no diagnostic answers for why you feel so crappy….but remember…just because you are in range (which is just a reference range by the way based on the average Joe), doesn’t mean it’s optimal!! Being at the end of a range could be the tipping point as to why you feel the way you do. Does it take medication to sort? Not necessarily…thyroid health is impacted by nutrient deficiencies, medications, stress, infection, inflammation, alcohol, smoking, surgery, heavy metal toxicity, or digestive issues and malabsorption. It is also more common in women, especially after having a baby due to the suppression of certain immune cells during pregnancy!!
You don’t have to settle for feeling exhausted all the time. By taking steps to support your thyroid, you can reclaim your energy and start feeling like your vibrant, radiant self again!
