“We know that they’ve talked about the importance of tackling child poverty and we’ve got a huge amount of evidence of the positive benefits that this programme has had... We very much hope it’s something that will continue.”

This week, our director Eve spoke to the BBC about the importance of the Big Norfolk Holiday Fun programme, which is due to come to a close after the winter programme of 2024, unless more funding is pledged.

The Department for Education (DfE) said it recognised the scheme was “hugely valuable” but said a decision would not be made until the Budget and Spending Review, which is due in October.

The Active Norfolk Foundation is a new charity that will be starting work in early 2025. The main focus will be the accessing of new funding streams to opening up new lines of physical activity work aligned to the vision of the charity.

This exciting new venture will be seeking to find new ways to inspire the people of Norfolk to become active with a focus on those that are affected the most by a range of inequalities. The new foundation will work very closely with the separate Active Norfolk active partnership and other local agencies to develop new and exciting physical activity interventions.

We are looking for 3-4 trustees to form the first Board of this new charity, on a voluntary basis. To find out more about the roles and apply, visit: https://www.activenorfolk.org/about-us/vacancies/

A crucial part of our work at Active Norfolk involves tackling inequalities in physical activity and sport. These can take many forms; including disability, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, faith and sadly many more.

Of course, there is still lots of work to be done, and there are always improvements to be made. It is for this reason we seek the voices of people in Norfolk through ‘focus groups’. These are groups made up of those who are impacted by these inequalities. They help us review our work and steer our aims in the right direction.

At present, we are looking for people to join the following focus groups:

👩 Women and Girls
🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ+
♿ Disability and Inclusivity
🌍 Ethnic minority groups

If you feel like you could share your opinions and experiences within the above groups in order to make an impact on Norfolk sports, we'd love to hear from you! To find out more and register your interest, visit: https://www.activenorfolk.org/about-us/what-we-do/focus-groups/

During the recent two-day system leadership workshop in Great Yarmouth, we delved into critical topics such as core practices that lead to systems shift, courageous leadership, building a common purpose and sharing of lived experience stories.

Colleagues and partners from across the district joined forces to look at new approaches to tackle inequality and co-design practical applications. Our shared vision? To design a plan that drives meaningful change.

Stay tuned for updates on this exciting project in the coming months!

Going for Green Pledge: Living in our county, we’re fortunate to have beautiful beaches and the fantastic Norfolk Broads. However, it also means that many of us reside in areas vulnerable to coastal erosion and flooding. Did you know that three in five adults in England say extreme weather has negatively impacted their ability to be physically active?

Sport England’s recent research highlights this issue. Let’s join the movement for environmental sustainability! Check out the Sport England Extreme Weather Report for more insights: https://www.sportengland.org/research-and-data/data/activity-check?section=thematic_reports
