Father's Day is a little bit different this year because Laura should be about eight weeks from giving birth.
I had this whole vision when we saw those two lines on a pregnancy test that on this day I would be able to roll over in bed, put my arm around her belly, and give her and our much-wanted baby a little squeeze.
I find myself up, out and about, trying to hold in some deep emotions that are at a dangerous level of overflowing - I know I should let them, but I need a moment.
Iโve seen a few guys while I was out: some deep in thought, walking their dogs, some hurrying to jobs. I found myself wondering how many of them are missing a child today, through loss, divorce or another reason.
My social media is a 50/50 today of men posting drawings their children have given them. The other half commented that a day that's meant to be happy is filled with grief.
I want to give them all a hug.
For the last eight years, Father's Day has been difficult for me. I haven't seen my stepkids since me and their mum split up. Iโve wanted to, but Iโve not been welcomed. Iโve had to accept that choice. Maybe it was my fault last time, but there's no blame here this time.
Experiencing a miscarriage as a man is tough.
I didn't physically go through it, and I often stuff my emotions down for fear of making it about me.
That last sentence is one of the reasons I work so darn hard on We Are Together. I want every man to know his feelings are valid. He doesn't have to make himself any less. Pregnancy loss happens to both of you in different ways.
Our last attempt to become parents was shattered last night. I went upstairs and hugged my wife as we both processed. I really did think that there might be some sort of rainbow on Father's Day, but it just wasn't meant to be. To quote Brenรฉ Brown differently: โthe story in my head Iโm telling myself is โฆ.โ I did tell myself a story of hope.
I find myself wondering how much time we have, how much strength we both have.
I'm writing out these thoughts in the hope that another guy will read it and know that he's not alone in his grief and in shaking his fists at the sky, shouting, "What has to happen for this much-wanted child to appear?"
I wish I had the answer.
For all the men out there who are struggling with Father's Day, I want to let you know that you're seen, and that if you need someone to talk to today or any other day, I'm here.
