CAN YOU TURN AND LOOK BEHIND YOU?

Sounds simple.

You reverse the car.

Look behind you when you’re walking.

Reach for something beside you.

Turn to speak to someone.

Your body rotates throughout everyday life.

But when I watch you turn, I’m not just interested in how far you can go

I’m interested in where that movement comes from.

Does your upper back rotate?

Does your pelvis turn with you?

Does your lower back try to create more movement?

Is one direction noticeably easier than the other?

Your body is incredibly clever. If movement isn’t readily available in one area, it may find another strategy to get the job done.

So I could simply say:

**“Turn a little further.”**

But more movement isn’t necessarily better movement.

First, I want to understand how YOUR body is creating it.

That’s what we explore through Pilates — and what I can investigate much more individually through Exercise Therapy.

Because I’m not just looking at the movement.

I’m looking at the body creating the movement.

Try it now.

Look over your left shoulder.

Then your right.

PUT BOTH ARMS ABOVE YOUR HEAD. WHAT ELSE MOVED?

It sounds simple.

But when I watch you reach overhead, I’m not just looking at whether your arms get there.

I’m watching how your body gets them there.

Do your ribs lift?

Does your lower back arch?

Do your shoulders creep towards your ears?

Does one arm move differently from the other?

I could simply tell you:

“Keep your ribs down.”

And sometimes a change in technique is all that’s needed.

But if your body keeps finding the same way around the movement, I want to understand why

What’s happening at your shoulders?

How well is your upper back moving?

What are your shoulder blades doing?

How are your muscles controlling the movement?

Because your body is incredibly good at finding another way to get the job done.

And reaching overhead isn’t just an exercise.

You do it when you put something into a cupboard, get dressed, wash your hair, hang up clothes or reach for something above you.

So I’m not simply interested in whether you can get your arms overhead.

I’m interested in HOW you get them there.

That’s the difference with Exercise Therapy.

Try it yourself. Stand side-on to a mirror and slowly raise both arms.

👇 What moved first — ARMS, RIBS or BACK?

CAN YOU STAND ON ONE LEG?

Before you answer yes or no, I’m actually more interested in how you do it.

Try it now.

Stand on one leg and notice what happens.

Does your foot grip the floor?

Does your hip move out to the side?

Does your upper body lean?

Do you wobble?

And is one side completely different from the other?

I could simply tell you to practise standing on one leg.

But I want to understand why your body is moving the way it is.

I’m looking at what’s happening at your foot and ankle, your knee, hip, pelvis and trunk — and how they’re working together to keep you upright.

Because balance isn’t just an exercise we do in a Pilates class.

You use single-leg balance every time you walk, climb the stairs, step over something or stand to put your trousers on.

So I’m not simply asking:

“Can you balance?”

I’m asking:

“How is your body keeping you there?”

That’s the difference.

In Pilates, we can explore and improve how your body moves.

In 1:1 Exercise Therapy, I can investigate your individual movement more deeply and work on what may be contributing to the way you move.

Now try both legs.

Which one surprised you?

If I don’t know how your body moves, why would I give you an exercise programme?
This is why I don’t start with exercise.
I start with you.
During an Honest Body Assessment, I look at how you stand, sit and move.
I want to understand:
What’s moving well?
What’s tight?
Which muscles are doing their job?
Which areas are working harder to compensate?
How is your body responding to different movements?
And what do you actually want your body to be capable of doing?
Because your goal tells me where you want to go.
Your assessment helps me understand where we need to start.
From there, exercise becomes purposeful.
We’re not choosing exercises because they’re fashionable, because somebody demonstrated them on Instagram or because they worked for someone else.
We’re choosing them because they make sense for you.
That’s the foundation of my Honest Body approach:
Understand your body first. Then exercise it.

Challenging yourself and exhausting yourself are not the same thing.
One of the biggest mistakes I see when people return to exercise is doing too much, too soon.
You haven’t exercised properly for months — perhaps years — and suddenly it’s:
Five workouts this week.
10,000 steps every day.
A high-intensity class.
Everything hurts.
And by week three?
You’ve had enough.
Your body needs to be challenged if you want it to become stronger. But the challenge needs to be appropriate for the body you have today.
I regularly ask my clients:
“Was that challenging for you?”
Not me.
You.
Because your starting point might be completely different from the person beside you.
Start where you are.
Challenge yourself appropriately.
Recover.
Then progress.
That’s how we build a body capable of doing more — without making exercise something you dread.
DO challenge yourself.
DON’T assume harder is always better.

Can your spine actually curl?
An abdominal curl isn’t simply about strengthening your abdominals.
When I teach this exercise, I’m watching how you move.
Where does your spine bend?
Does your neck become tense?
Can you breathe?
Can you control the movement?
Does anything feel uncomfortable?
Because doing the exercise and moving well through the exercise aren’t necessarily the same thing.
This is something I want you to start noticing in my exercise demonstrations this month.
Don’t just copy what I’m doing.
Notice what YOUR body does.
That’s where better exercise begins.

You don’t need your old body back.
You need to understand the one you have now.
Pregnancy changes us.
Motherhood changes us.
Menopause changes us.
Injury, work, stress, inactivity and simply getting older can change us too.
That doesn’t mean we stop challenging our bodies.
Quite the opposite.
I want you strong.
I want you capable.
I want you confident enough to use your body without constantly worrying about it.
But the route there shouldn’t be based on what you could do ten years ago.
It should start with understanding what your body can do today.
That’s the difference between simply giving you exercise and using exercise therapeutically.

“I need to get a bit fitter first.”
No.
You really don’t.
And I hear versions of this all the time.
“I’ll start walking again first.”
“I need to lose some weight.”
“I haven’t exercised for years.”
“Everyone else will be fitter than me.”
“I need to get myself sorted first.”
But getting yourself fitter before asking for help with your fitness is a bit like cleaning the house before the cleaner arrives.
Where you are now IS the starting point.
Can’t get off the floor easily?
We’ll start there.
Haven’t exercised for ten years?
We’ll start there.
Menopause has knocked your confidence?
We’ll start there.
Had a baby and your body doesn’t feel like yours anymore?
We’ll start there.
There isn’t an entrance exam.
Exercise Therapy isn’t about proving what you can do.
It’s about understanding what you can do now — and building from it.
