While recording and editing the latest podcast episode for Chronic & Thriving - Unfiltered - "is my home making me sick?" I actually had to stop because I was feeling so unwell. 😫

Ironic really.

In fact, I felt so poorly that I had to lie down, but even that didn't help. In the end, I had to go outside, sit in my coat, and just get some fresh air.

This episode focuses on mould illness and, in particular, chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS). A number of well known public figures have shared serious health experiences which they associate with mould, including Chris Williamson, host of the Modern Wisdom podcast.

After a home dust test and a mycotoxin urine test both came back positive, I'm now starting to wonder whether mould exposure and the mycotoxins could be contributing to inflammation in my body. Could that be making my rheumatoid arthritis symptoms worse?

I don't yet know.

But this is something I am investigating. Tomorrow I have a meeting with a mould specialist (functional doctor), and because of the high results that came back from my Ermi home dust test, I also need to seriously consider having my home professionally inspected.

3️⃣ Steps to Investigate Your Autoimmune Symptoms & Possible Triggers

Living with an autoimmune disease can leave you with plenty of questions. Why did it develop and could something in your diet, lifestyle or environment be contributing to how you feel?

Autoimmune conditions are complex. Genetics, immune activity and environmental factors can all play a part, and what affects one person may have little impact on another.

While medical treatment can be essential for controlling disease activity and preventing complications, there are also practical ways to become more involved in understanding your health.

✔️Step 1: Get Tested Understand What's Happening
Before trying to address possible triggers, it helps to understand what's happening in your body.

✔️ Step 2: Explore an Elimination
Some functional medicine practitioners suggest a short elimination period, often around three weeks, involving foods such as gluten, dairy, alcohol and added sugar.

✔️ Step 3: Track, Hunt and Address Possible Triggers
Some people notice changes around periods of poor sleep, infections, stress, hormonal changes, particular foods or environmental conditions. Keeping a record can help you identify patterns you might otherwise miss.

Graves' Disease. Overactive Thyroid Symptoms, Treatment & Remission - My Story

"I’d never even heard of Graves’ disease until my own body seemed to accelerate beyond my control. If one small gland could affect my heart, weight, sleep, eyes and emotions, what else did I need to understand?”

If you've just been diagnosed with Graves, or you're trying to understand a collection of possible overactive thyroid symptoms, you might be wondering what Graves actually is, why it can make you feel so incredibly ill, what treatments are available, and whether you are ever gonna feel like yourself again.

So I'm gonna tell you what happened to me, but I also want to explain some of the things I desperately wanted to know at the time. I can't tell you what will happen in your case, but hopefully my experience will help you know what to ask and what you might want to look into next.

Chronic inflammation isn’t just about what you eat.

Food matters - and research increasingly supports dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean diet as part of a healthier inflammatory balance, but inflammation is more complicated than a list of foods to eat and avoid.

Sleep, stress, movement, metabolic health, smoking, persistent infections and underlying inflammatory or autoimmune conditions can all be part of the picture.

So rather than asking “What’s the most anti-inflammatory food?” perhaps the better question is “What might be contributing to inflammation in my body - and what can I change?”

In our latest Avani Health Hub article, we explore:-

• what chronic inflammation actually is
• why it matters for health
• what it can feel like
• factors that can drive or sustain it
• what the evidence says about food and Mediterranean-style eating
• healthy fats, ultra-processed foods, gluten and more
• practical changes without turning your diet into a list of rules

Because when it comes to inflammation, consistency counts, not perfection.

🎙️ The podcast that changed everything…

This really is where my story began.

One podcast led to a lot of questions and those questions led to books, research, testing, lifestyle changes and eventually a completely different way of thinking about my health.

It also became part of the journey that ultimately led me to create Avani Health Hub.

In the first episode of Chronic & Thriving - Unfiltered, I'm going right back to the beginning and talking about what I heard, why it affected me so much and what happened next.

If you've ever heard or read something that made you completely rethink what you thought you knew about your health, I think you'll understand this one.

Small changes can be easy to underestimate.

A little more movement. A better night's sleep. Making time to eat well. Stepping outside. Taking five minutes to switch off.

None of these have to be perfect to matter.

What’s one small thing you could do for your health today? 🌿

💡 Did You Know?

Insulin resistance can develop years before type 2 diabetes is diagnosed, often without obvious symptoms.

You don't have to be overweight to have insulin resistance. While carrying excess body fat increases the risk, people of a healthy weight can also develop insulin resistance due to factors such as genetics, inactivity, poor sleep, chronic stress, hormonal conditions and diet.

Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) aren't just for people with diabetes. Some healthcare professionals use them to help people better understand how food, sleep, exercise and stress affect their blood sugar levels, although they aren't necessary or appropriate for everyone.

Type 2 Diabetes Is Rising

A new study from Imperial College London has highlighted a worrying trend: more young adults are developing type 2 diabetes than ever before. Reported on ITV News and published in Lancet Regional Health Europe, the research found that between 2011 and 2024, new diagnoses rose 69% among women aged 20–29 and 43% among men in the same age group - even as rates fell among older adults. The rise was most pronounced in White, Asian and Black women aged 20–29, and in White women aged 30–39.

The researchers, led by Dr Shivani Misra at Imperial College London, analysed data from the English National Diabetes Audit, making this the first study to track type 2 diabetes trends across the whole English population by age, s*x and ethnicity. Dr Misra noted that earlier onset of severe obesity in young people is a key driver - increasing type 2 diabetes risk earlier in life, with poorer long-term health outcomes as a result.

Although the headlines have focused on women, this is not just a women's health issue. Rates are also rising in younger men, a reminder that metabolic health is becoming an increasingly important concern for all of us.

These findings are concerning, but they also present an opportunity.

Type 2 diabetes doesn't usually develop overnight. In many cases, the body shows warning signs years before a diagnosis is made, giving us the chance to recognise potential problems early and make positive lifestyle changes that may help reduce the risk of developing the condition.

🌿 Behind the Scenes with Olivier Sanchez: From Michelin-Trained Chef to Naturopath, Best-Selling Author and Educator.

I’m delighted to introduce this Behind the Scenes Member Spotlight, featuring Olivier Sanchez, founder of Nutrunity UK. Many naturopaths arrive at the profession through their own search for answers. For Olivier, that journey began in the demanding world of Michelin-standard kitchens, where a deep fascination with food and biology eventually collided with the effects of relentless hours, chronic stress and years of unresolved health problems.

Today he works with complex gut, metabolic and mental health concerns in his own practice and alongside a functional medicine clinic and a longevity clinic. He is the author of three best-selling books, including the Energise series and Overcoming IBS, which are now used by health professionals and naturopathic students, with a fourth book, on heavy metals, in progress. He speaks at international conferences, delivers practitioner webinars and shares educational content through his YouTube channel.

In this spotlight, Olivier shares the personal journey that shaped his work, explains why he places the microbiota-gut-liver-brain axis at the heart of his approach, and offers a powerful reminder that the body works as an interconnected whole and that symptoms should not be viewed in isolation.

I hope you enjoy his story as much as we did!
