HOW CAN I BE HAPPY WHEN THERE IS SO MUCH WRONG IN THE WORLD?
A WONDERFUL ANSWER BY A BUDDHIST MONK

A man once asked an old Buddhist monk:

“How can I allow myself to feel peace or happiness when the world is full of suffering, injustice, pain, and chaos?”

The monk looked at him quietly and asked:

“If your house was dark…
would you refuse to light a candle
because the whole world is not yet bright?”

The man remained silent.

The monk continued:

“The suffering of the world is real.
But destroying your own peace will not remove it. It may only leave you with less strength to respond to it with compassion.”

The man replied,
“But isn’t being happy selfish when others are suffering?”

The monk smiled gently.

“Caring for yourself is not the same as ignoring others. A person who is completely overwhelmed by despair may have less energy to help. Inner stability can give you the strength to care without being consumed.”

Then the monk pointed to a pond nearby.

“When the water is disturbed, it cannot reflect clearly.
But when it becomes still, everything becomes easier to see.”

He looked back at the man and said:

“The same can be true of the mind.

A restless mind may react with fear, anger, and hopelessness.
A calmer mind has more space for wisdom, compassion, and thoughtful action.”

The man lowered his head and whispered,
“But the world still feels so heavy.”

The monk nodded.

“Yes.
And that is why your peace matters.”

Then he added softly:

“Do not try to carry the suffering of the entire world in one heart.

Be kind where you are.
Help where you can.
Speak gently.
Protect those you can protect.
Reduce suffering in whatever small ways are within your reach.

A single candle cannot remove all the darkness…
but it can still brighten the room around it.”

In Buddhist teachings, happiness is not about ignoring suffering. It is about learning to remain compassionate without allowing the suffering you witness to consume your entire mind.

You are allowed to experience joy while caring about the world. You can acknowledge what is broken and still appreciate what is beautiful. Sometimes protecting your inner peace is not an escape from compassion—it is what gives you the strength to practice it.
