How is flu transmitted?

Flu is transmitted by droplets, aerosol, or through direct contact with the respiratory secretions of someone with the infection.

Coughing, sneezing and talking can produce virus-laden particles of different sizes.

Very small particles remain suspended in air and can be inhaled into the bronchioles and alveoli. The largest particles may settle on surfaces where they can be transferred to mucosal surfaces via the hands and cause infection.

The flu virus is transmissible from about 24 hours prior to the onset of clinical symptoms through to about 3 to 5 days after disease onset. Children and immunocompromised individuals may transmit flu for up to 7 days or more.

The best way to protect yourself is to get a flu vaccine - book yours today at our pharmacy here: https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/vaccination-and-booking-services/book-flu-vaccination/

Question:

What is one of the most effective interventions to reduce harm from flu and pressures on health and social care services during the winter?

Answer:

Flu vaccination is one of the most effective interventions.

Vaccination has been shown to have many benefits including reducing the risk of flu illness and hospitalisation from flu and flu-related death.

Whilst it may not prevent every person who is vaccinated from getting flu, flu vaccination has been shown to reduce the severity of illness.

🚨 Look out for:
🌑️ A high temperature or fever
πŸ€• A severe headache
🀒 Feeling or being sick
😴 Drowsiness or difficulty waking
πŸ’‘ Dislike of bright lights

If you or someone else has these symptoms and they are getting worse quickly, seek urgent medical advice immediately. Don't wait for a rash to appear.
