Who actually owns the design? “That’s the specialist contractor’s design.” It might be, however has someone checked that it works with everything around it?

Specialist contractors may own individual packages, but design responsibility and design coordination are not the same. Individually compliant packages do not automatically create a coordinated building. A building must work as one complete system, regardless of contractual boundaries.

Our latest blog explores why clear communication, visibility and effective coordination across the design process matter.

The earlier foreseeable risks are addressed, the easier they are to manage.

Effective Principal Designer support begins with a clear appointment and continues throughout design, construction, handover and post-completion.

The objective is simple: help clients and design teams make informed decisions earlier, maintain a clear evidence trail and reduce avoidable risk later in the project.

If you are preparing for a new construction project, now is the right time to review how Principal Designer support will be integrated into the process.

Another sign won't fix a pedestrian route that nobody can sensibly use.

Look at the actual route people take, separation from moving vehicles and visibility where paths cross. The right arrangements depend on your site.

Tea, coffee… a safer workplace? ☕🫖

Could a cup of tea or coffee improve health and safety at work?

When work gets busy, it’s easy to jump from one task to the next without stopping for breath. But a quick tea or coffee break gives us the chance to pause, catch up with colleagues and ask:

How are things going?
Is anything causing concern?
Are there any challenges we need to tackle?
Is there a safer or better way to do something?

People do not always raise concerns in formal meetings. Sometimes, a relaxed chat over a cuppa is exactly what’s needed to spot a problem early, relieve a little pressure or help someone feel supported.

Environmental compliance is becoming increasingly data-led. Is your waste evidence ready?
An industry update reports that digital waste tracking requirements began affecting permitted waste-receiving sites in England and Wales from 1 October 2026. Further stages are reported for other parts of the waste chain.

Even where a business is not yet directly affected, this raises some useful questions:

♻️ Do you know where your waste goes?
♻️ Can you verify the information supplied by contractors?
♻️ Are waste records complete and easy to retrieve?
♻️ Do responsibilities match your actual working arrangements?
♻️ Is environmental performance reviewed, or simply filed away?

Organisations using ISO 14001, evidence should help people manage environmental impact and make better decisions. It should not exist solely for the next audit.

Now is a sensible time to review your waste processes, contractor information and environmental objectives against the latest official requirements.

Are the same issues coming up on every site inspection?

A clear action list and proper follow-up can help turn the report into something useful. TSD provides site inspections and practical, sensible advice.

“Health and safety has gone too far.” - We’ve all heard it.

But perhaps the better question is: have we forgotten how far we’ve come? Construction has made enormous progress in the way risk is planned, managed and communicated. Yet the job isn’t finished.

The answer isn’t more paperwork for the sake of paperwork.

✅ Better leadership
✅ Better planning
✅ Meaningful risk assessments
✅ People confident enough to speak up

Has health and safety gone too far, or has the industry simply raised its standards?

The Design Responsibility Matrix: useful tool or false sense of security?

A Design Responsibility Matrix can tell you who owns each design package.
But it cannot guarantee that those packages work together.

This is where the Building Regulations Principal Designer adds real value: Understanding interfaces, challenging gaps and connecting the right people and information. Every significant package should answer two questions:

Who is responsible for designing it?
What other designs does it interface with?

Use the matrix. Keep it current. But do not confuse allocated responsibility with coordinated responsibility.

Are we managing the matrix or are we managing the building?
