Your skincare routine matters less than your plate.
A meta-analysis of 61 human studies just looked at which foods actually influence skin ageing.
They tracked wrinkles, redness, pigmentation, elasticity, hydration and skin barrier strength.
Different nutrients worked on different problems.
Carotenoids (carrots, tomatoes) → linked to less redness. The evidence here is still developing, so watch this space.
Healthy fats (avocado, flaxseed, omega-3s) → improved elasticity, wrinkles and hydration.
Polyphenols (green tea, cocoa, pomegranate) → strengthened the skin barrier, and also reduced wrinkles and improved hydration.
Fats and polyphenols showed the broadest benefits across multiple markers.
So this is not about one superfood. It's about a pattern of eating.
Collagen and prebiotics/probiotics also improved hydration. That fits the gut-skin axis, and fermented foods like kefir, yoghurt and kimchi are an easy place to start.
The likely mechanisms: antioxidant protection against UV stress, preserving collagen, and protecting cell membranes.
If you want better skin, start with what's on your plate before you reach for another serum.
Your skin reflects what you feed it.
