It really doesn’t get much better than this! ❤️✨
What a bloody lovely weekend! And another reminder of why I absolutely LOVE my sober life.
This weekend was supposed to look very different. I should have been in Mallorca for Majorcan Soul, enjoying house music and singing with friends. But after coming back from holiday and nearly losing my little dog, who needed a major operation, I made the decision to stay home and be with her while she recovers.
Nearly a grand lost in the process, (not including the £5k towards my doggies op!) which was a bit of a kick in the teeth, but some things are simply more important. ❤️
And actually, things worked out rather beautifully!
Saturday morning, I had an impromptu treatment booking. I don’t normally work Saturdays, but a few hours doing something I love and earning a little extra money was a lovely bonus.
Something I probably wouldn’t have even considered years ago, because I’d have been recovering from Friday night’s drinking!
There’s one of those little sober wins we don’t always talk about.
Then came Saturday night!
I managed to get myself to Bang Bang Church, somewhere I’d been wanting to go for ages, but it originally clashed with Mallorca.
And here’s something else I absolutely love.
I took myself out. On my own. Completely sober.
I knew plenty of my friends were going to be there, but I wasn’t actually meeting anyone in particular. Everyone was scattered around the club, some with partners, others with their own friends.
So there I was, a woman walking into a club on her own, stone-cold sober, not knowing exactly where anybody was!
And do you know what?
Sometimes you’ve just got to get up and GO!
My dancing side kick girlfriend is still in America for work and it was too short notice for everyone else.
You can’t always wait for someone to come with you, or for the perfect circumstances, or for somebody else to give you the confidence to do something you want to do.
Sometimes you have to be that person for yourself.
So off I went, heels on, ready for a dance!
And what a night!
A few bottles of water, a couple of cans of Coke, some absolutely fabulous music, lots of dancing in heels (which I’ve discovered I’m not quite as good at these days 😂), and a proper good old giggle with friends, including some faces I hadn’t seen for ages.
I had a BANGING night! Literally! 😂💃
And not a single photograph taken by me all evening!
Although quite a few people took photos of me, so goodness knows what’s floating around out there! 😂
I’ve actually stolen this photo of the venue because I was far too busy enjoying myself to get my phone out!
And what a beautiful venue it was, dancing in a gorgeous church!
I honestly can’t recommend Bang Bang enough. The guys put on such a fantastic night, and one of the things I absolutely love is that their events start at 3pm and finish at 10pm.
How bloody perfect is that?!
A full afternoon and evening of incredible music, dancing and seeing friends, and you’re still home at a reasonable hour!
We’re so lucky here in Cornwall to have so many incredible DJs, events and people creating these experiences.
And there’s something really special about going out in Cornwall. It’s such a beautiful, relatively small place, and everybody seems to know everybody!
I always feel such a lovely sense of familiarity when I’m out.
And as a woman who quite happily goes clubbing and dancing on her own, that means a lot to me.
But there’s something else that being sober gives me.
Awareness.
I can read a room. I can read an environment. I’m aware of what’s happening around me, who I’m talking to, where I feel comfortable and where something might not feel quite right.
I’m not relying on somebody else to look after me or get me home.
I’m fully present, fully aware and able to make my own decisions.
Of course, being sober doesn’t mean nothing bad can happen, but it certainly makes me feel more confident in my ability to recognise situations and look after myself.
And that freedom is absolutely priceless.
One of the funniest moments of the evening was when a friend of a friend bought me a drink.
He started taking the p**s a little about me drinking Coke, asking why I wasn’t drinking alcohol.
“Oh, I don’t really drink.”
“Don’t you do anything then? Pills? Coke? Anything?”
“Nope. Absolutely nothing!”
He made another cheeky little comment, and I casually said, “I’ve actually been sober for five years.”
Well, I’ve never seen someone look so horrified at themselves! 😂
He couldn’t apologise enough. Bless him!
I wasn’t remotely offended. In fact, I thought the whole thing was quite funny and rather sweet.
Later, as I was wandering back to my car, a young couple asked how I was getting home.
“Oh, my car’s just there!”
“YOU’RE DRIVING?!” 😳
“Yep! I don’t drink!” I said, still holding my can of Coke.
“Oh, good for you!”
And off I went, chuffed that I could simply get into my lovely warm car and drive myself home.
Well, that was the plan.
Instead, I decided that 10:45pm on a Saturday night was the perfect time to go food shopping.
Went home, got changed into my tracksuit bottoms, jumper and hat, and wandered down to Tesco, convinced it was open 24 hours.
It wasn’t.
So that was a complete waste of time! 😂
And now it’s Sunday morning.
I’m enjoying a beautiful warm bubble bath, candles glowing, a lovely clean bedroom waiting for me, and NOT A HANGOVER IN SIGHT!
Did I sleep brilliantly? Absolutely not! Between the dogs waking me up and the cat deciding I was his personal trampoline, I’ve had better nights’ sleep!
But I’m just a little tired. That’s it.
And sore knees, heels aren’t my dancing friends!
No anxiety. No banging head. No feeling sick. No wasted Sunday recovering from Saturday.
Just a lovely, slightly sleepy Sunday ahead.
The weather looks like it might brighten up, so I’m thinking some beautiful food with my daughter, a walk with the dogs, a bit of housework (because the rest of the house isn’t quite as immaculate as the bedroom 😂), and then cosying down ready for work on Monday.
And THIS is what I love about sobriety.
It’s not about sitting at home missing out.
It’s about having the freedom to say YES to life.
Yes to a last minute client.
Yes to an unexpected night out.
Yes to walking into a club on your own without needing alcohol or somebody else to give you confidence.
Yes to dancing, laughing, music and connection.
Yes to driving yourself home safely whenever you fancy.
And yes to waking up on a Sunday morning feeling bloody wonderful about the weekend you’ve just had.
Sobriety hasn’t made my world smaller. It’s given me the confidence and freedom to make it bigger.
Five years sober, and I still get these moments where I think…
It really doesn’t get much better than this. ❤️
Life isn’t always easy. Plans change, things go wrong, money gets lost, and sometimes life throws an absolute sh*tstorm your way.
But I’m so grateful I get to navigate it all with a clear head, a full heart and my sense of humour firmly intact.
Absolutely smashing it! 💃✨
How’s everybody else’s weekend going? You all good? Had a good one?
