MummaBaby_space Emotional and practical Post natal support for any new mums in the Surrey and Sussex area

I am a postnatal doula working in the Surrey and Sussex areas in South East England. I have trained in baby wearing, mindful breast feeding, mothers mental health, and postnatal massage. I run a check in service as well as minimum three hour sessions where I support a new mother post birth, signposting, reassuring and nurturing her so she can put her well-being first and bond with baby in a safe space. I am also a developing doula companion to new doulas and the Doula Uk Guildford rep.

I’ve been feeling my Dad particularly close these past few days, so pulling this card feels especially meaningful.

Halloween, or Samhain, is traditionally believed to be a time when the veil between the living and those we’ve lost is at its thinnest.

With Dad’s birthday falling around this time, and tomorrow marking two years since we lost him, it feels even more poignant.
Two years. Somehow both a lifetime and no time at all.

I’ve always believed in those little signs, those moments when you feel someone close without quite knowing why. Owls, Robins, Certain songs, my awareness is always wrapped around these things like a bow so maybe that’s why this card feels so special.

It is a reminder that we don’t need all the answers. Sometimes we just need to trust what we feel. The space between missing someone and still feeling them beside us.

I’ll always be listening, noticing, and trusting that love doesn’t simply disappear.

You know those little jobs that never seem to end when you’ve got a baby?

Well, while baby enjoys a lovely nap, I get busy making life a little easier for mum.

Bottles washed and sterilised, washing up done, supper prepared, toys tidied, clothes folded… and of course, a biscuit and a cuppa waiting for mum.

Nothing particularly extraordinary. Just all those little jobs that can feel enormous when you’re caring for a baby.

And the best bit? Mum gets to spend that precious nap time doing whatever she needs. Resting, showering, eating or simply enjoying a moment to herself.

A lovely morning doing what I love, making life a little easier for a new mum.

Because being looked after shouldn’t be a luxury. It’s exactly what she needs and deserves.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this year I’ve been thinking about what I want to say, if anything at all.

Twenty years and four breast cancer diagnoses later, cancer has become part of my story, but it has never been the whole story.

There has been a great deal of life in between. Becoming a mother, raising a daughter, learning to live with uncertainty, finding work I love and discovering that sometimes the most valuable thing we can offer another person is simply to be there.

My experiences have undoubtedly influenced both the mother I am and the postnatal doula I have become.

They have also made me increasingly aware of how desperately we need better, more joined-up, specialist support for parents affected by cancer. Not only during pregnancy or the postnatal months, but through the years of raising children alongside treatment, recovery, recurrence and monitoring.

The truth is, family life doesn’t stop when cancer arrives and neither do the needs of the people living alongside it.

Between Feeds & IVs is where I write about some of this. The ordinary alongside the extraordinary. The messy middle. The things we carry and the lives we continue to build.

So this is my little contribution to October. Not a reminder to be brave or strong, but a reminder that behind every diagnosis is a whole life, and often a whole family, that deserves to be supported.

Rather timely, really.

With a daughter who has somehow just turned 16, half term already upon us and some beautiful new mummas to support, life feels happy and full at the moment.

And this morning I picked the Self Care card.

Something I’m rather good at encouraging in others, but not always quite so good at allowing for myself.

I have another scan this week, and with October being 🎀 , I’ve been thinking about whether to share a little more about that side of my life. But actually, I think this little card is enough for now.

There’s always a lot going on, some of it lovely, some of it a little harder to carry, and I’m learning that I don’t always have to keep up with everything, or everyone. Sometimes it’s ok to just sit by the fire, with the dog beside me, and give myself permission to just be for a while.

So perhaps this week I’ll try to take a little of my own advice.

Who knew you could settle a baby, cook dinner, tackle the washing and put the world to rights, all in three hours?

Just another day in the wonderful, slightly chaotic but beautiful, nurturing world of postnatal doula life!

Thank you, for these lovely words. I am so grateful for my incredible clients and this wonderful Mumma, a midwife too, no less. Such an honour to nurture those who nurture others. Feeling very lucky to call this my job.

Literally no words. 🥹

How on earth did we get from this to 16?! SIXTEEN?!

Motherhood is such a funny old thing. Just when you think you’ve got the hang of one stage, along comes another to remind you that you haven’t got a clue!

The little girl who once needed me for everything is now finding her own way in the world, and I’m learning that being her mum means growing and changing alongside her. Preferably without asking too many questions or being too embarrassing!!

16 years of loving her, learning from her and occasionally wanting to hide in a cupboard.

Happy birthday, my gorgeous girl. What a ride it’s been and I suspect we’re only just getting started! 🫣

.
A little reminder from my Space Between cards.

We don’t have to be everything to everyone, to fill every gap or have all the answers. Some days we achieve loads and other days, just showing up is enough.

I often catch myself thinking that being busy makes us more worthy, but I know that isn’t true and slowing down doesn’t make us less.

A gentle reminder for you, and for me too.

I’m really good at letting go!!!! 🤣🤣
As long as I’ve planned it, scheduled it, made a list about it and everyone sticks to the plan. I’ve tried to channel my inner Elsa, so many times, but it’s always a work in progress!

In truth, I’m terrible at it.

Motherhood has been teaching me this for years. Running my own business clearly decided I needed extra tuition.

Children change and grow with no regard for any parental responsibility.
Plans change, whether we like it or not.
Work changes and we bend and flex under rules and guidelines totally influenced by powers above and Instagram does whatever the hell it wants and an algorithm, is an unpredictable toddler who refuses to be reasoned with.

And sometimes the best thing we can do is stop trying to control it all and trust what comes next.

Still learning. Still making lists though! 😉💜

Sometimes we simply need to ask:
What would nourish me today?

More rest. Better food. Fresh air. A conversation. A little less rushing.

Start there.
